Re: Burningman has Changed Me...
I"m not sure it's "changed" me........I'd say it has "accentuated" me, maybe given some clarity, to the world I've always lived in.
It's added to my life, in the stellar characters I've met, and those who've allowed me to call them "friend".
I've felt the little kid again, standing in a group of intellectual giants, who accept me, just as "a Burner".

I was already up on that on, after a Japanese rest stop which was a kinda toilet seat over a deep pit. Even the Roppongi subway floor toilets looked good after that experience! Or visiting relatives who had no indoor plumbing. Or trying to find toilets while on the road in Iran and Saudi. Even that year the folks took me to Europe hopping military flights one year.
The portos at Burning Man are pristine, sweetly scanted gardens of ease and joy after all that.
Re: Burningman has Changed Me...
The portos are nicer than the gas station bathrooms on the way to the playa . . . although they're not as good for playing handball.

I never forget how much I hate defaultopia. I want to go to that dusty place and never come home. Sadly clicking my heels never quite works.
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

Re: Burningman has Changed Me...
way back when, in the mid-nineties, i went with my dear friend to burning man for the first time.
it was her first time too, but she was in san francisco, and knew alot of burners.
on the way there, in the middle of the open playa, (you just had to drive "north" for 20 miles back then, until you saw BRC) she opened up her little book of questions and one (or group) in particular continues to play inside my head every day.
you go to the doctors, he tells you you have one year to live....what do you do?
where would you go? Whom would you see?
ok, now the doctor says, wait a second, i read that wrong, you have one month to live...
same questions.
whoops he fucked up again and says you have one week....Now What?
the nurse comes in with yet another chart and the now red-faced doctor says, i am so sorry, but it's only ONE DAY...
make your decisions on how you are going to live whats left...
my point is not so much Carpe Diem, because that is important, but dont just eat that Hamburger, EAT THE HELL OUT OF IT, it may be the last one you EVER HAVE...EVER
do you really want to have regrets as the Bus is bearing down on you?
this is not to say throw everything away because we are all fucking doomed (thats another story) but instead SAVOR THE FLAVOR!!!
enjoy your life, make it meaningful, go for the brass ring...
BE A PIRATE!
take life by the balls, or tits, or whatever you wanna grab on to, it's an adventure, to it's fullest..steal it if you have to.
sure, Pirates are Opportunists, but we live by a code.
that code may not coincide with the Law, but there is HONOR amongst thieves, and often thats all we have, and would prefer death to losing it.
Burning Man made me ask that question almost every day....ok, Im Above Ground and Breathing, hot Damn!!! Now What?
every day, EVERY DAY, you never know who you will meet, or what will happen.
it's better than any video game, chat room, tv show, religion, drug, food. or even sex.
LIFE, CHAI, To Be.
it's the only thing we got, and eventually we will be dust, and ALL go back home to whence we came.
i never realized this until i saw the wide open space of nothing, and it struck me that all of my ancestors were there too, and that someday, maybe sooner than later, i would be dust as well.
BURN LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW.
and love life with all you got.
Yaaarrrrr.

Re: Burningman has Changed Me...
OK, I easily give hugs. First Burn I tried to shake hands with some old Burner I was meeting and he gave me a big hug and said we don't shake hands on the playa. Lesson learned.
And, while I still can't dance, technically, I absolutely do it anyway.
Both things I took back to Defaultia.

Re: Burningman has Changed Me...
BRC and hanging with Burners off-playa has helped make me want to be more artistic and creative. I've always loved wearing costumes but now I am starting to create my own. I learned how to use a sewing machine for the first time last week. I am learning soldering for el wire. I am hoping to have friends teach me welding after the playa this year. Creating makes me smile. I found something I love to do.

Re: Burningman has Changed Me...
Burning Man made me realize I had always compartmentalized my "responsible" impulses and my artistic impulses. Coming back from my first burn after having met so many regular, responsible people who also did crazy shit, I was finally able to integrate both sides. I didn't undergo any major life changes, I'm happily still a corporate web dude and father and husband. But I've shared my passions more with those closest to me and I no longer temper my conversation depending on audience.
Also, I now enjoy the goddamn dubstep, in moderation.

I just don't care what other people think of me. If they don't like it, that's their problem.

I had to upgrade my storage unit to fit all my burner gear, so I am poorer as a result. Thanks alot, bman.
