Better than goggles! Try these this year-
Better than goggles! Try these this year-
My first year was 2010, I did alot of research before going to the burn, saw everyone raving about these white goggles that are used in dirtsports and what not.
I got a pair, brought them both in 2010 as well as 2011. Used them for a total of 15 min between the two burns combined. Turns out fine particulate dust does kinda make its way through the thin layer of foam around the goggles anyway.
You know what I brought both years that worked infinitely better?
Motorcycle shades.
Theyre made to fit snug to your head and have a layer of foam that goes around the eye pieces that fit much much better than ski type goggles.
Remember- bring at least two pair- one shaded or with reflective mirroring on it, one with clear lenses so you can see at night.

Re: Better than goggles! Try these this year-
Good suggestion, but where do you go to try on various motorcycle goggles?
In the summer, the sports stores sometimes have bins of last year's ski goggles for cheap(er). I like the venting, and you can just shake them out and brush them off as the dust accumulates. Suppose you can fit extra pieces of thin foam or felt in there if you want to block more dust.

Benn there, done this...hot glue will block any holes you're concerned about (I too have some motorcycle shade/googles, but my spares are ski type, all glued up).
I'm the MAN in a truck, burner who is stuck, you're in luck! I'll whip out my BIG tow chain and not charge you, not even one lousy buck!

I like the ski goggles too cause they fit over my glasses.

My boyfriend likes onion cutting glasses. They are smaller and fit snuggly to your face. Unfortunately they only come with clear lenses.

Something kinda fun in a storm... Snorkeling mask. It seals with a vengeance against your face and covers both eyes and nose. It would be fun to put a filter on a snorkel and use that too.

And you can get snorkeling/SCUBA masks with prescription lenses. Though I don't know how well the plastic skirt would seal on very dusty skin...

Maybe some people should plan ahead and get prescription glasses that fit over goggles.

I found that BMX goggles work fine over my glasses and work well in the more severe dust storms. (aka the 12 hr storm of 07), the 5 hour storm in 08 and assorted storms of 09 & 10...

Re: Replacing Foam on Snow Cross Goggles?
I scored a great pair of goggles at the Goodwill yesterday for $6....
my only question(s) are:
-should i replace the foam backing for sanitary reasons?
-how would i go about doing so?
the goggles have a foam cushioning betweeen goggles and face (about 1/4 in thick). tho these were second hand, the foam does NOT appear dirty or gross, but i hate the idea of sweating into foam that someone else may have sweated into.
i was considering pulling off the foam, buying foam at the craft store, using the pulled off piece to trace a pattern, cutting out new foam, and glueing on the goggles (but which adhesive to use?)....
or i could just soak the foam with lysol spray to disinfect, give a rinse, leave in the sunlight, try to kill any germs...
anyone ever replace foam on goggles?
EDIT: just found this link to how to do it: http://www.ehow.com/how_8769512_replace-foam-ski-goggles.html they recommend using hot glue, but in my experience, hot glue can sometimes melt craft foam....

Re: Better than goggles! Try these this year-
I agree, but makes sure to wash the bleach off so it does not eat the foam. if possible take the lenses out and see if a tattoo shop will run then threw the autoclave for you. That is the only way to be sure even though with porous fibers it still might be hard. I know with my hair and skin license anything porus has to be discarded after each use. Metal tools are the only exception and those are put into a sterilizer (autoclave). Honestly though the risk of catching anything is slim to none as most worms like tina pedis (thats on feet anyways) don't live long outside the body. But to be safe bleach them or go uber crazy and autoclave them.

Re: Better than goggles! Try these this year-
Actually the toilet seat is the cleanest place in a bathroom as long as you do not hover. Urine is sterile, poop not so much. You can not catch AIDS, Genital Herpes(HSV-2) or STD's from seats. They die as soon as they hit the air. But you do have a risk of catching worms, scabies and Herpes-1 from things that come into great contact with your skin, such as a face mask ( i am unsure how long before they die, but ring worm on the face would not be fun or pink eye) so I was just giving her some info that would help her if she wanted to use it. Everyone has a level of comfort they like.
But honestly I'm not worried about germs at all. I once licked a hand rail in a Paris subway station to prove my point about germs to a group of prudes I was with.
Yep Still Alive.

Check out your local Destination Harley Davidson or other motorcycle shops for a wide selection of try-onable goggles.

Re: Better than goggles! Try these this year-
Yeah, what Dragonpilot said. I dont get motorcycle goggles, I use motorcycle shades, of course the goggles would probably work even better, but straps bug the $h*t out of me. The foam on those works better than goggles, theres also less distance between your face and the lenses. Those white BMX type goggles- those are the exact kind Ive got. Motorcycle shades beats them hands down, no question about it...

I kid you not, when I was younger and more obnoxious, I would literally shit on a floor before Id sit in a public toilet. Im proud to say after a couple burns, I am COMPLETELY cured of any issues in that department.
Communal living under such circumstances- I got food poisoning last year after I was invited to have a meal at a friends theme camp, of course guests where invited to wait til everyone else dipped their dirty a$$ed $h*t laden meat beaters in the salad. Lucky it was on Sunday before I left- I woulda been so pissed off if I was poisoned at the burn and had to miss out on a day or two.

I've yet to find goggles I can see through, fit over my glasses, don't steam up, or fit my face. Most just suck and the Buckys end up wearing them.

RainX does a spectacular job of keeping dust and mud from sticking to the lenses. I use this stuff on my jeep windshield and headlights when we're out in mud. It's weird. A no-fog wipe and a flannel polishing cloth will help too.
You absolutely must have a pair of -clear- dustproof goggles because if a storm comes up at night and you're stuck out on the deep playa totally fucked out of your head, in a near-blackout, and you can't see through your dark lenses. No fun.
By the way, using saline solution or eyedrops in a dust storm is like flushing your eyeballs with concrete mix.

Got that damn right. And if you did forget your goggles and have to squint your way back home, never EVER touch your eyes to remove a particle. You'll get shit in your eye instead of around it. It's almost amazing how little of the dust gets in your eyes while squinting; maybe it melts away or something. However, wiping your eyes is essentially putting all the dust shit that's on your fingers in your eyes, resulting in tears, and later concrete forming on your face.
