Anecdotal stuff
Found out this morning that 6 people in our camp with non-STEP tickets aren't going. I declined my STEP ticket because a friend of a friend was selling her physical ticket. My cousin and his partner decided to go last week, they already found both tickets at face value (granted, they are long-time burners living in San Francisco).
Moral of the story: as the event gets closer, a metric buttload of tickets will become available.

Re: Anecdotal stuff
We've got tickets shifting about within our camp too. Every year there's a fair amount of churn (the stat I heard was that at least 25% of all tickets change hands at least once between purchase and coming through the gates). Stuff comes up, vacation time gets canceled because of some crazy thing at work (or a change of jobs), best laid plans of mice, and the general tendency for long-time burners to just get tickets first, then worry about whether they're going to go or not later.
Plus I think that among the crowds who are joining us for the first time this year, there's a certain amount of sticker (and culture) shock. If you're a festival-goer, even a seasoned one, you figure you'll fork out the cash for the ticket, basic camping gear (if you don't already have it because you've been to a few of these things), and then some food (unless you planned on buying food at the event). Burning Man is a horse of another color (taste the rainbow!). So many more things to buy, so many more things you need to figure out and do or provide for yourself, and holy fuck why is it so fucking far from the airport? Kudos to those who've hung in there, by the way.
I've got to find the box of leftover dogtags from 2011, some of those sayings seem perfect for this year hehe

Re: Anecdotal stuff
The NYC craigslist is positively bursting with face value tickets.
I flipped out a few weeks ago when I found one 40 minutes away. Drove out there to pick it up to offer to camp if anyone was missing. Now they're everywhere.
This is a good thing, and a good thing to remember for future years. Never stop prepping.

Re: Anecdotal stuff
People can't get rid of their tickets in Toronto. I think the distance/planning involved in big travel had people without tickets resigned to missing out this year, and didn't book vacation time, didn't book flights etc.
The moral of the story- prepare as if you have a ticket, there are always tickets in August.

Re: Anecdotal stuff
Pretty gratifying to see tickets on eBay going for face or less now, and those auctions with a start price higher than face and fees are ending without a single bid. Gotta be some irony in folks expecting to make an easy chunk of cash scalping a ticket, and then get "burned".
