Most snowshoes I've seen have cleats for getting a grip on ice, deejay risers, Thunderdomes, etc.

Try Hakka R tires. One and a half car lengths stopping on snow at 40 kph. Once below -25C, that's sometimes up to two to two and a half car lengths. Very cold black ice can be up to six car lengths, but is usually around three.stretch80 wrote:...Triple your stopping distance when the temperature is between 2C and -20C, when the temp drops below -20C you probably only need double the stopping distance. You're talking about those new fangled plastic thingies.Bob wrote:Most snowshoes I've seen have cleats for getting a grip on ice, deejay risers, Thunderdomes, etc.
We're talking about real snow shoes. The kind you steal wood from the beavers for, and then heat it around the stones of the fireplace or the corner of the wood stove. In a pinch you can burn the rims to keep warm, chew the webbing for sustenance, and use the lacings for making snares and flossing.

I am talking ICE. minimal snow. It is actually more difficult to stop between 0C and -20C than it is at say -45C or colder.Canoe wrote:Try Hakka R tires. (Not all winter ice driving is the same. Driving in Saskatchewan is completely different than Ontario or even Calgary at those temperatures... All depends on the humidity, or lack of it.)

Re: Pointless tips that might or might not help you out at a
I remember the first time I heard the phrase "I hate white rabbits" being yelled out around the fire ring to chase the smoke away. The phrase seemed more than a little odd. But the moment smoke made a move towards me at my next campfire I belted out the silly chant almost immediately. And the darn expression worked. The smoke drifted over to the next person in our group. It's as if I had some type of supernatural powers or something. That moment solidified a firm belief in the phrase and since then I've used it on a regular basis. But does it have any merit? Well, not really. It seems the whole thing originated from the idea that white rabbits were considered an omen of death and that in England good luck would come upon you if you called out "white rabbit" three times on the first of every month. The poor white bunnies have been cursed every since.

Rabbit lawn ornaments placed around your camp will keep you from getting run over at night or in a whiteout. Works on the principle of reverse-jinxing the DPW rubric, "Don't brake for rabbits."

If driving a beater of a vehicle (especially RV's with unique parts) avoid traveling east on I-80 on Labor day. After Winnemucca the next open auto shop is near Salt Lake.
Or least that is the next Auto Parts store that will answer their phone on Labor Day.

Pointless?
Kind of subjective, like "Hope you're hungry?", and your location.
An adequate amount of high strength wire will stop any mechanical treaded vehicle.
This includes an Abrams or Leopard.
The wire must become fully engaged in the tread.
Also,
the Beast of War is a great film.
The film is based on the concept of nanawatai.
I wonder if the concept is honored today, as the chapandaz has been replaced by bikers?

Hydrazine added to nitromethane will enhance your gas mileage considerably.
Mixture may become a tad volatile.
If you don't know your chemistry, DON'T TRY THIS!
If you really want to experiment, start with nitropropane.
