Water Check at Gate?
Water Check at Gate?
Hello eplaya!
I've heard a few times that water is being checked at the gate (ie, 1.5 gallons per camper/per day). As a group, we're renting a truck and will be hauling all the camp water in it and people will be caravaning in personal vehicles.
Question is - is this something my campers should be worried about? Do we need to distribute the water among the vehicles (that'd be pretty difficult)?
Is it enough to say that the water is in the camp rental truck?
Any guidance is much appreciated
Ryan

They didnt check me last year. As far as I know, they dont check if you're prepared -- just that you have a ticket. They figure, if you die, it'll be your fault.
Edit: Not to mention they would have no way of knowing how many days you planned to stay, and the fact that it'd be incredibly difficult to do such a check (even if the water was in the car with you). Pretty sure they wouldnt consider doing this. Besides, what would they do -- turn you away? I think not.

I've never heard anything about them checking that you have water, doesn't make sense to me since like you many camps divide who hauls what over different vehicles. I'm sure someone with prior Gate experience will know more. Part of Radical Self Reliance is keeping yourself alive.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Bring enough in case the rental truck breaks down, and give an honest answer if asked.

Yea, you need at least that much. They run around like rats looking for people without tickets hiding somewhere in the back or under the carriage. I love it when I roll up to the point of entry
I go 2gallons a day as its always good for something

Make sure you have enough water in your vehicles to hold you for at least a day in case something happens to the vehicle carrying the water. Just a suitcase (2.5 gallons) should hold you for 2 or 3 people for the first day, as long as you're not exerting yourselves.
Personally, I find myself thirsty once we get past Nixon, so I make sure I've got a couple bottles of gatorade (they'll get reused later...) & water for the trip up.

Thanks all - that's super helpful and I think I can lay this issue to rest with my camp.
Have also advised all of my campers to have water in their vehicles for both the entry and departure (it's on our driver checklist).

We always have a small cooler of drinks in the vehicle. In case we break down or something.

Prepare for the case that you get separated from your truck and that you will have to spend the first night without them - we always keep sleeping bags, a basic set of clothes and some food and water in our car.
Gate has the ability to send you back should they get the impression that you are unprepared and likely to suffer. They will not be counting water gallons or cans of food (they're not your mama), but if it looks like you packed for disneyland and not a camping trip in the desert they might ask an extra question or two.
Simply seeing that you are asking this question tells me that you're prepared enough to not worry about gate.

Re: Water Check at Gate?
You might get asked about supplies at gate, but highly unlikely and would depend on the individual gate person doing your search. I might inquire if I only see a flat of water bottles in a car of 4 people coming in on Monday night. A simple it's on the camp truck behind us is all you need to answer if it happens to comes up.

Re: Water Check at Gate?
This as good a place as any to bring this up.
You have your water already, don't you??
One of the oldest tricks in the Burning Man playbook is to buy a fuckload of bottled waters and put them all in your freezer. If there's no room in your freezer, eat whatever is there, no matter what it is!
You'll have frozen water in bottles, which you can put into a cooler. It will act as ice (well it IS ice, dumb head!) and will not only keep your other stuff cold, but you will be able to drink it when it starts to thaw.
Now, if you're NOT getting little water bottles and are somehow bringing your water in bulk (probably better for the trash situation), then you're on your own. Smoke 'em if you got 'em. That is all.

Could you imagine how long it would take to get in if they were checking to make sure everyone had 1.5 gallons of water per day per person in each vehicle?!?!
