I have no doubt that far more extreme stuff is out there, but the places one chooses to hang out in will often dictate the scenery.

Wow, this really is useless. I know all of the veterans on here are just having an amazing time scaring the newbies but, even though this is not my first year going, even im a little nervous. Actually, this thread made me much more nervous. Some of us are really trying to get a better idea as to what we can do in addition to what's already been told of us to do to prepare for Dustopolix. I certainly dont want a newbie's tents flying into my camp or straight into me for that matter. Useless, useless and useless.
Sorry, just a liiiitttllllle cranky today. Pre-playa jitters perhaps?? But, seriously, scaring the newbies for 16 straignt pages really isnt doing anything positive.

Re: Playa Climate Prediction Center
Rebar the shit out of any structure and use multiple guide wires, don't leave anything loose in camp that could possibly be taken away by the wind, get some good goggles and a pack of dust masks, don't ride your bike during a whiteout, try to position your tent downwind behind a vehicle because a cheapo Walmart tent may or may not survive a serious dust/wind storm without a stronger structure over it of a windblock. That's about it. Not much more you can do.DustyBubbles wrote:Wow, this really is useless. Here is the deal. There have been serious dust storms every night. Therefore, one needs to anticipate strong winds and plan appropriately.DustyBubbles wrote:Wow, this really is useless. There are several ongoing discussion about tent pegs, shade structures and such. Google: eplaya tent pegs ...
Make sure you have goggles and some sort of dust mask with you all the time. If you are properly prepared, the storms are actually fun.
If, you think the weather is going to be to much for you. You need to make a decision.
I'm on-playa on this Saturday, I will try and report back what I experience (assuming I can get some sort of interwebs out there...)

That was really refreshing! Thank you. I am overprepared and I welcome the dust and I have never thought about not going because of this. It was just getting a little to snarky in here and I seriously thought my head was going to explode. I serioulsly have had nightmares of being marred by a flying tent poles and now (from seeing all of those portapotty pics) will probably have a nightmare about being knocked over while in one.
I appreciate you

As long as everyone realized that the wind is a serious thing to consider, and plan to deal with it, they will be fine. (aka: 2011 weather conditions were perfect, 2012 weather - uh, not perfect, but more like what the playa really is like)
I'll take whatever the playa give me. No problems. At least it won't be -50F ...
