No bikes in 2012?
No bikes in 2012?
I am hearing rumors that the playa is in rough shape this year due to weather, and that bikes might be un-usable this year... any word on this?

Re: No bikes in 2012?
Use the search function. I've heard mixed reviews, Take a bike anyways and make your own decision when you get there weather its ride able.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.
Re: No bikes in 2012?
I just heard tonight that riding your bike is going to be difficult this year and that people will be walking alot.
I don't know, but bring your bike regardless

I heard somewhere that the "man" is going to be set on fire on Saturday sometime after 9...that is all.
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

Re: No bikes in 2012?
I'd sure as shit rather have brought my bike and not used it than spend a whole week on the playa wishing I had brought it...Provided it's easy-enough to haul out there and back.

Spend a few minutes reading the boards, or look at recent JRS posts. If you can be bothered, you might learn something.

I heard a rumor that some of these questions have been asked tens of times before, some with the exact same phrasing, and doing some research yourself to find answers isn't so tough.

Re: No bikes in 2012?
I have some suggestions for bikes in high dust (deep dust drifts and such):
- Make sure to get a fatter tire bike. City 3 speeds, hybrids etc, will flounder in the dust.
- I would suggest for 26" wheels using tires of at least 2.25" that are good in the dirt.
- Leave your 700c wheeled bike with less than 34mm knobby cyclocross tires at home. This year is a mountain bike and cruisers with knobby tires Burn
- I'm bringing a true fat bike with 4" knobby tires, even though it's a bit nice for the Playa. Yes I'm bringing a lock.
Also, use a silicon spray to protect your bikes delicate parts from the Playa. I'm going to use WD40 Silicone Spray which is cheap on Amazon.

I have it on good authority that the BLM has banned bikes this year due to the number of approved mutant vehicles.
I read it on the interwebz so it has to be true.

Re: No bikes in 2012?
Man y'all are starting to sound as redundant as the questions
I'll answer....Bring the bike, do not leave it at home. There is always better areas to ride than others. Maybe you just use the bike to bike a couple blocks to the porta pots, even then it is handy enough to bring.
My buddy was out on playa working and came back and told me that there were some areas that were decent enough for a nice cruise.
Yeah yeah and Daft Punk is playing at my camp.

Re: No bikes in 2012?
Hey, maybe this belongs in a separate post, but why is it that any time anyone asks a question, the first three to five responses are always some completely useless drivel like "Maybe if you tried searching the forum, blah blah that question has already been asked...gnarrrrrg" or something sarcastic and equally useless? My question is...what compels these people to take the time posting anything at all, when their comment contributes absolutely nothing? When I read a forum, if someone asks a question that I know the answer to, or have an interesting opinion on, maybe I'll chime in, maybe not. I guess that would depend on how valuable I thought my input on the subject was. If I don't have anything to contribute, I simply move right along. I understand that it is the nature of forums to be dominated by a handful of keyboard jockeys beating off to their ever rising post count, but some people don't spend all day on forums, reading and posting in every thread—and it is also the purpose of forums for people with stupid questions to ask the more experienced members. Most people don't just post questions without having a look around first....search returns are often vague and off the mark, when it comes to specific questions...I can sort of understand this mentality on private forums, but on public forums, especially one that champions radical inclusion, I just thought maybe this kind of elitist faggotry could take a break
Oh yeah, I'm a newb ass birgin. Don't act like you didn't already peep my post count. I'm new here, let's be friends. Gimmee a hug.

Okay I realize that was uncalled for and I tried to delete that last post but couldn't. M'bad.
I'm coming alone for the first year, and have a lot of questions. And whenever I finally find one of them on here the answers are vague as fuck or self-impressed snark. I'm not a troll or anything and I apologize for the tirade

But you feel better now, yes? And so goes the internet. Come to the meet and greet on Thursday (6 pm, Barbie Death Camp, 4 and E). We'll hug you to bits. Or not if you don't like hugs. You can see almost everyone of us "keyboard jockeys" in the flesh.
And bring your bike, with a lock and lights.

Best way to search is to use g****le and ask your question and add the word eplaya. The search function on here sux balls............. But you will find all the answers you need on this form and not just about the event.thefarbetween wrote:Okay I realize that was uncalled for and I tried to delete that last post but couldn't. M'bad.

Here is a standard response - Grow some nads dude. The playa is harsh, we are harsh, this ain't no picnic. From my experience the first few responses usually answer the questions, then the flood gates open to pure Snarkalepsey.thefarbetween wrote:Hey, maybe this belongs in a separate post, but why is it that any time anyone asks a question, the first three to five responses are always some completely useless drivel like "Maybe if you tried searching the forum, blah blah that question has already been asked...gnarrrrrg" or something sarcastic and equally useless? READ the Survival Guide, read the part for Birgens. Use the search function.
Yes, there is a Bike Ban this year. hahaha
(OK, for you newbies, your bikes should be fine in the city streets and these get watered and packed down. Out on the open playa, there will be dunes that you will probably have to walk your bike through. Bring your bike, you'll be happy you did)
Happy now?

Re: No bikes in 2012?
I LOVE humor and the absurd and the surreal, more than humorless sincerity. Overly sensitive people find humor to be useless drivel.....bah !!!!
Radical Inclusion means also being included in the humor and jokes and ribbing and snark. Radical Self-reliance includes being able to handle some humor directed at oneself. Weeding out people with no sense of humor and the inability to roll with alittle deprecating humor is two services this forum provides.
How helpful can you be to someone without a sense of humor and without the ability to laugh at one's self? Maybe discouraging them from getting their feelings hurt at the Burn is the best thing to do. Ask a question, get a sarcastic response, laugh, so what? You got your answer. Bring your bike.

I suppose I'm one of the "keyboard jockeys" even though I rarely check my post count...
I do give good answers. The horrible thing is that even when I don't have a good answer, I often feel compelled to try.
Think of us as a brain trust. When we get asked the same old question we are a little testy. We just answered it two days ago, and look, there's a thread two threads below yours where we answered it! If we didn't have snark and jokes and chit chat most of us wouldn't spend much time there, diminishing the size of the brain trust. You'd probably get answers, and they'd probably be okay, but you might miss better answers, and you might not get the broad perspectives we grant now.
And none of us want to see birgins blowing across the playa and through the trash fence...
