Travel plans Jungo Road State HWY 49

Just wondering why when i google map the route follows I80 to Fernely and not 'Winnemucca to 447 via Jungo Road (State HWY 49)?? Is this a bad road??

If you search ePlaya for Jungo Road you will find plenty of information. Funny thing is they too the Google Street View Camera down it, but they don't have a gravel cam angle. No cell phone service out that way.

Countless reports here that Jungo is a horrible dirt road with lots of sharp rocks. A few drive it for sport, but if you just want to get to BRC, follow I-80 to Fernley.

Jungo is a dirt road, I would advise against it. It's doable in a regular truck but I wouldn't try it fully loaded down. If you do try it, make sure you have a few spare tires with you.

The secret to Jungo Road is respect and preparation.
I recommend premium Fix A Flat (a large can x4) and a 12 volt powered Air Compressor that you test to make sure it inflates the tire while you're still sitting in the driveway.
A second spare is not essential, but does offer a little more peace of mind. But good tires with deep tread are a must. No Pep Boys type el-cheapo tires here or you'll be hoofing it back to Winnemucca cursing every dang mile of the trip.
Next up is check your ground clearance. 5 inches of ground clearance is about as low as you want to go. And make sure you check that when you're fully loaded.
If you have these things, and have enough ground clearance, you're still not ready. Your mindset is next on the checklist.
This road will take you to school if you drive it like an idiot. It's got mining trucks that beat part of it down but other parts are like someone dropped their rock garden in the middle of the road. It's got dips. Steep gut dropping dips that the faster you go the more risk you take of slamming your vehicle into the rocks.
Drive too fast and you can easily crack a windshield. Or an oil pan. Or worse.
Go slow, be vigilant, and you can be successful.

Cell phones? Even with a Wilson amplifier you end up in no mans land about 30 miles out of Winnemucca.

In short prepare your ass off, practice radical self reliance and you'll be ok. Otherwise you'll be a statistic. I was on it in last month and it's the best it's ever been but it still demands respect. I've been taking Jungo to BRC since 2002, now that I live in Vegas I have been across there while exploring the backcountry more than ever. And I saw a VW Bus make it across there so anything's possible!

When I arrived the Wed pre-burn in 2010, we met a burner who was stranded at the gas station. They decided to try and save time by taking Jungo Road, and ripped the oil pan off their car. She got a ride to Gerlach, but forgot her EAP, so she was stuck. We gave her a PBR. That road does not sound like fun at all.

I remember one gentleman flipped his SUV on that road a few years back. Luckily he was surrounded by other people, when it happened...very unluckily, he died a couple days later at the hospital.
