Shut down new account creation until after the Burn?

ePlaya has great moderators. But we are in the busy time of the year and the spammers are attacking. Like zombies they keep coming. I wouldn't mind if new account creation was shut down until say Sept 5th. The sign up page could explain why.

Flagging doesn't do anything to stop them from posting again and again. It's a just a ping to the mods to delete the post. At least from what I understand.

I fully support disabling new accounts through the burn. With the proper notes on sign up pages, ect.

Problem with a ban is lots of folks create accounts to buy/sell tickets this time o year.

There are lots of sleeper spam accounts that snuck in here. They are all set up, but have yet to spew their commerce.
It's really crazy, but this morning there were two attaching at the same time. I will hopefully have some access near center camp this year, and will swat what I can.
I do cringe when firing up my computer after 8 hours of travel.

Thanks Shambala for manning the ship while at sea. I so rarely catch spam on eplaya. One time I saw one, I posted a reply and Savannah sent me a PM to tell me it's best to leave them alone and just click the !.

Thanks to all the mods for keeping the board as clean as it is. I know it's a mostly thankless job.

Check with the tech team. Mods should be able to connect to the hub router in a low dust spot for priority access. Bring an ethernet cable and thingie for your laptop if it needs one.

If they're all using the same IP, but that isn't really that common. I know on my own servers I categorically block certain countries (sorry Macedonia) and even continents (I don't want the Asian flu) from connecting, but I don't know if that would fly here.

There are multiple IP address and even similar names. They appear to be coming in batches of 40 each slammed pretty fast. I am pretty sure they have the dates of the event, because this happened last year. We will do our best to keep things in check.

This is the point I can't wrap my head around. Out of the thousands of posts and millions of spam emails, how many actually result in $$ at all? How can it possibly be profitable to generate this crap, even at 3rd world pay scales?

Then they should be prepared to have an ePlaya account earlier. In fact, the Virgin Introduction Newsletter (VIN) should clearly state that Virgins should get an ePlaya account and start reading. The Saturday before Burning Man starts, don't allow anyone to create accounts.

What would also help is that you just make some regular posters to ePlaya moderators for the week. I would have been more than happy to be a Spam Clean Up Guy for the week.

IMHO the unmonitored last-minute ticket & ride posts are another valid argument for shutting down eplaya registration when the mods leave the building.

Surprised I haven't seen more burner merch posts this year, though I guess that's mostly on the craigslist & such now.
