I've found a great house I want to buy in a little town of 300 people near here that I love and I can run my business out of. But the fucking mortgage companies don't seem to think I make enough money...on paper, it doesn't look great but I have enough to do it, it's that home-based-business-sole-proprietor thing they get stuck on. I've been looking for a place for over a year and this is the best one I've found, plus I know lots of people in the town and they are creating a really awesome community there that I want to be a part of and they want me there too. Stupid fucking mortgage companies!

Yeah, it is really hard to get things like loans and insurance when you are self-employed. My bank wanted me to get "income insurance". I was also a sole proprietor ... which means that if I get sick, the shop isn't open and I don't make any money. Fuck! People think for some reason that if you have your own business you are rich. FUCK THAT. It just means that you like being your own boss, even if you do have to pay 200% of the social security of employed people, get no unemployment insurance, have to pay your own medical, dental, life, whatever insurance AND can't get a fucking loan because they don't know what will happen to you if you get sick because the self-employed are, well, self-employed and if the self is fucked so is their payment.

Now, hire an employee and watch the fun REALLY start. Now you have to pay 50% of their Social Security, all of their state required disability insurance, workmans compensation, etc ... OUT OF YOUR POCKET. FUCK! Oh, and you can now forget about Sundays off because now you need to do payroll paperwork for the govt. No wonder shit is expensive. The government (federal, state and local) has tacked so much shit on to the business owner that he HAS to make shit expensive to cover his costs.

John Edwards, his VP candidate is a serious part of what ails this country. Part of the problem and not the solution. Made his money suing doctors for allowing women to give birth naturally instead of C-Section. Resulted in the c-section rate in South Carolina going through the roof ... with no reduction in the conditions that doctors were being taken to court for.

Bush and Cheney are good old boys. They have the money and the connections but are managers, not visionaries. Rely too much on underlings to set policy and are too influenced by their lobbying.

Nader is a FUCKING nut.

There isn't a good choice. I will tell you one thing, though. I have REALLY been disappointed in the Democrats so far. They concentrate on criticism and have offered very little in the way of vision. Quick to say what Bush is doing wrong, but I am waiting to hear a clear and comprehensive plan instead of little dribs and drabs from sound bites. Also, "anyone but Bush" is a piss poor FUCKING platform if you ask me. Don't worry, little sheep, I will lead you away from the big bad wolf. Just don't ask too many questions and follow me.

geekster, I'm actually okay with the payroll deductions- it sounds like they are way more down there, it's about 10% of my staff's wages. And I have no problem getting insurance (unless you mean health insurance, which isn't an issue here).

I have income insurance, which is called disability insurance here, and trust me, you ought to get it, it's a really good thing. I broke my leg two years after getting it- I couldn't work for 7 months and got paid over $20,000 from the insurance plan. The purpose of it is to make sure that your business overhead expenses are paid because you can't work, so even if you have no business because you are sick or whatever you still have to pay those things like rent, utilities, loan payments, etc. It saved my ass and I highly recommend it to every business owner. As I was lying all drugged up in my cot at home, I was thanking myself every single day for getting it.

But fuck the mortgage companies that don't work for people like us. I'd have an easier time if I worked for someone else, even though I've had this business for over 6 years.

Well, Sparkletarte, I am no longer self-employed so I don't have to worry about it anymore. And if I ever go that route again, it will be on a smaller scale than I was before. It was just too much. Hard to work 10-14 hrs/day doing hard physical work and then have your weekends eaten up with paperwork if you want to keep everything straight. And it doesn't take long to get away from you either if you put it off.

Shit, this is the wrong fucking thread but this is a good example of an issue that worries me. The high cost of medical care. It seems our political system has borderline personality disorder when it comes to handling it. Either stay completely away from the issue or try to place 20% of our economy in the public sector. All or nothing. Neither approach is workable in my opinion. One thing that can be done right aFUCKINGway was reducing DUMBASS FUCKING lawsuits. Now ... if you have a VP who made his entire career on DUMBASS FUCKING medical lawsuits, you think that is going to happen? I FUCKING DOUBT IT. You wonder why drugs are more expensive in the US than Canada? Because in Canada you can't file a DUMBASS FUCKING LAWSUIT against the company and try to hit the LITIGATION LOTTO. Companies charge more here in order to pay for the DUMBASS FUCKING LAWSUITS.

The doctors in Florida have the right idea. They are dropping malpractice insurace completely. Why? When the plaintiff finds out that the doctor only has a '97 buick and a house and doesn't have a 20 FUCKING million dollar insurance policy backing him up, the FUCKING lawsuits seem to go away.
