Re: POST ALTERNATE LOCATIONS FOR BM 2013
It appears that these little counties north of Reno have made an art out of screwing the burner crowd passing through. I would personally love to see the event moved out of Nevada just to shove the lost dollars up their greedy asses.
There are so many other places that would welcome this event and the revenue it brings.

Re: POST ALTERNATE LOCATIONS FOR BM 2013
No matter where the event would move there will be a large ransom to pay, if you think all local government won't have their hands out and be performing shake downs you're dilusional. They've worked 20yrs. to get where they are with these folks, where ever they move it'll be the same old shit. Court, court and more court.
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

Just shift it to the part of the playa that's in Washoe county & cut out Pershing altogether. The hit to their county budget will teach 'em...

Maybe a law firm could hit them with a class action on behalf of the participants.

Simple and easier than the other ideas out there...
From out of a dream I rode to beyond the Horizon. Got Adventure? The Zen Gear One Meteior Crater surrounded by a lot of roos, emus, Yowies, drop bears and one major flood in the driest desert on Earth... There still was a bottle of red with dinner.

Re: POST ALTERNATE LOCATIONS FOR BM 2013
It depends on the BLM. That's where a good relationship with them might come in handy. Does anyone know how much of the area for large gatherings is in Washoe? Of course, if 9-mile, or whatever the designated entrance is, is in Pershing that's potentially sticky.

Re: POST ALTERNATE LOCATIONS FOR BM 2013
The '97 event on Hualapai, mostly involving private land, was in Washoe. That went well.
The '98 site near the 3-mile playa entrance was split about 2/3 Washoe, 1/3 Pershing. Think my camp was right on the county line. In wet years, the lower playa nearer to Gerlach is a bog. So is Hualapai.
I'm sure there's a magical rainbow playa somewhere.
The DeLorme Nevada Atlas & Gazetteer is a fair to middling map set that shows county boundaries, FWIW. Sad that the Rand McNally store on Market St closed, they used to carry it. REI might have it.

At that point it would be easier to find a WET lake bed and camp on rafts.Theraplst wrote:I had a dream where about a 1/4 mile circle around the man was made into a 2' water pool. we must make this happen.

Jesus, people.
If you don't lock your rafts, you can't expect them to be there when you return.

Re: POST ALTERNATE LOCATIONS FOR BM 2013
I've heard mentions of trying to secure private land on which to permanently base the event. Are there any realistic options for this where you could get a comparable "playa" environment, or are most of those federal/state land? As I understand it, that would also eliminate the requirement for a police presence (though, some amount of a police presence is probably necessary for basic safety, so you wouldnt eliminate it entirely). Obviously this isnt a novel idea, I'm just curious to know how realistic it is since I hear it often.

See, people have come on this board and said that taking it off public land would strip us of the protection of the Federal Aegis (I'm being a little high-falutin here because I don't understand it all, so I'm going a little artificial in hopes that people will be careful with the quasi-information) and that they could then cancel the event.MacGlenver wrote:I've heard mentions of trying to secure private land on which to permanently base the event. Re: POST ALTERNATE LOCATIONS FOR BM 2013
From what I understand, holding it on private land would put the land-owner in a questionable legal position regarding liability. They can be held responsible for knowingly allowing an event where crimes will be committed. Think of the parents who get in trouble for having drunk minors on their watch / property, but on a *MUCH* larger scale. They can also be held accountable on a civil level for any accidents that were to happen.theCryptofishist wrote:See, people have come on this board and said that taking it off public land would strip us of the protection of the Federal Aegis (I'm being a little high-falutin here because I don't understand it all, so I'm going a little artificial in hopes that people will be careful with the quasi-information) and that they could then cancel the event.MacGlenver wrote:I've heard mentions of trying to secure private land on which to permanently base the event. You know, it's just another one of the recurring conversations on eplaya. Rotating reasons that don't actually add up to compelling action. Maybe this year it's to escape media attention.unjonharley wrote:Some one please tell me again.. Why should Burning Man move?

I think there's a way to capture those roommates in a constant haze of pot smoke induced pocket universe, and shrink it down to the size of a large houseplant. That's the problem with the new majors in colleges undergoing serious grade-inflation, you just never learn to do the hard but useful things.clocksnmirrors wrote:theCryptofishist wrote:I think there's a way to capture those roommates in a constant haze of pot smoke induced pocket universe, and shrink it down to the size of a large houseplant.
