Re: Animals on playa this year
We saw a few small birds after one dust storm, and toward the end about a half dozen ravens.

Rick is sure that he saw a pelican fly over us. Is that even possible?

I dunno, but maybe:elKay wrote:Rick is sure that he saw a pelican fly over us. Is that even possible?

They are pretty big birds, so they might be able to fly from feeding waters (and the white pelicans feed inland) to Nevada.

Thanks, I guess it is possible. A little more google and I just found a reference to the pelicans at pyramid lake: http://www.nevadaaudubon.org/birdinggui ... dlake.htmltheCryptofishist wrote:I dunno, but maybe:elKay wrote:Rick is sure that he saw a pelican fly over us. Is that even possible?

Oh yeah, if they feed in Pyramid Lake, it's their back yard!

If it had been anyone else who saw it, I would have thought they were seeing things. I couldn't imagine that they were native.
Re: Animals on playa this year
A "grandfathered" off-leash DPW dog peed on our egg, which is kinda funny to think about, but he peed on the electronic controllers for the $5k worth of lighting of our CORE project...he's lucky that he didn't get electrocuted (although mighta served it right), and lucky that our electronics were not damaged, or there would have been serious hell to pay. Our group lodged a complaint with BMorg. I'm ok with grandfathered dogs, but they shouldn't be allowed to pee on art, dammit!

I saw the pelican! It was one of the more magnificient slices of beauty I have layed my sweet little eyes on. It flew at sunrise Thursday when the winds were void and the flags slept. Flew around three thermals round and round looking down at the playa saying good morning. That wing span is something else.

my camp saw one too. flew right over us! pretty trippy. This was the first year I'd seen more birds during the whole week. Usually it's just the ravens at the end.elKay wrote:Rick is sure that he saw a pelican fly over us. Is that even possible?

Re: Animals on playa this year
They often fly over the Mississippi river between WI & MN in the spring. I once saw a flock of over 100 of them. Never expected to see that the first week of April. Supposedly many years ago a storm knocked them off their normal migration & they have been visiting ever since.theCryptofishist wrote:I dunno, but maybe:elKay wrote:Rick is sure that he saw a pelican fly over us. That was odd but I would really be impressed by hundreds of penguins.

Re: Animals on playa this year
About 7 years ago, i had some campers that camped at my camp. I didn't know them personally, they were friends of a friend type of thing. I was cool with them until they brought out their pitbull. He was a good dog but it was fucked up they brought him from Vegas. After a day of them walking around with their dog, they got harassed so much they bounced back to Vegas which was cool with me. I asked how they got the dog into the party and they said they paid cash to sneak it in when they got searched. Kind of fucked up that someone at the gate took a cash bribe....bad bad bad.
Fuck you, fuck you...you're cool, fuck you !!

With further investigating I believe I actually saw a Great Blue Heron. Is that out of the question?Gonzo mamiya wrote:I saw the pelican! Apparently it is not. Although, it's a ways away from water. There is frog pond nearby and other water up north still in the National Conservation Area, however.

Re: Animals on playa this year
Ive seen a lot of animals out there almost every year I have gone. From camels, horses, sheep, ducks, dogs, scorpions, playa mantis, lady bugs, spiders, all kinds of things. Never seen a cat though. Never really seen any problems with it, but I'm not sure I would bring my dog out there. And my cat trips the fuck out even when I hold her out my back door so I doubt she would be comfy on the playa. Maybe back in the olden days I would bring my pup. She has gone with me on other large camping events but BM might be just a bit to big.

Re: Animals on playa this year
Herons, egrets, waterfowl & shorebirds frequent the number of farm reservoirs along Route 34, as well as seasonal wetlands around the creeks and reservoirs. And sometimes the playa, when they think can find tasty critters or forage. Birds might land anywhere that vaguely looks like appropriate habitat, so it shouldn't be surprising to see white pelicans that might have wandered up from Pyramid Lake, where they nest on Anaho Island along with various cormorants, gulls, terns, herons and egrets. Might be juveniles confused about how to find the ocean. I've seen pelicans many times at lakes in the high Sierra Nevada.Gonzo mamiya wrote:With further investigating I believe I actually saw a Great Blue Heron. 2011 there was a girl with a small red fox in her hood. Saw her a couple of times in center camp.
