Gyre, you were not at this years event so why are you engaging in this thread? And since you have not been for a number of years why do you think your points of view/comments are useful.gyre wrote:That's why there are so many russian dashcams.

My experiences with police in 2012 were fine. Chatted to a number of Pershing County guys and we talked about the art, the weather and if they wanted a cold drink (they declined the cold drink). I

I didn't say I was there this year.
Perhaps you should fuck off and ignore what I say if you don't find it pertinent?
Maybe you can post your chart of who makes which years?
No doubt you're great fun in your local homeowner's association.

Hmm, I wonder if telling someone to fuck off counts as personal abuse?gyre wrote:I didn't say I was there this year.

I wonder if we could commoditize the posts and sell them as sleeping aids - or would that be against BM's no commerce rules?

I checked the rule book, and telling someone to fuck off is more like a greeting or a phrase like "have a nice day".
I hope this clears things up.

Re: 2012 Experiences with Police
The only direct experience I had with law enforcement was when I was rifling through my backpack at Opulent Temple changing our my water bottles and cop had a flashlight pointed directly on me. Since I wasn't doing anything illegal nothing came of it. That and we saw the massive amounts of people getting pulled over at the gate on Sunday night when we went out on the Nevada- it was pretty lame

Re: 2012 Experiences with Police
What number do you put on the word "massive" amount of people being pulled over? Massive is a very broad term.. It's 11 mile to Gerlach.. 125 to Reno.. Is that number around one per mile, ten per mile or one for the whole trip?Good Sarah wrote:The only direct experience I had with law enforcement was when I was rifling through my backpack at Opulent Temple changing our my water bottles and cop had a flashlight pointed directly on me. Or are speaking you the Sunday coming onto the playa? Same question, how many is a massive.. You would be traveling at 5 mph for about three mile in the dark before turning into the city. That is about 20 minutes travel time..

This being my first year of Eplaya-ing, I've found the same. Much less friendly post-burn. Will have to try the drinking method, though I'll have to wait until I'm off work, unfortunately.Eric wrote:Think of it as post-playa depression. Many of the police are nice enough people, but the people who give them their orders seem to want to transform Burning Man from a freakout festival to something more like a Garth Brooks concert.

Well we counted 20 police cars lit up, actively pulling people over at the gate on Sunday August 26th we had a view of the incoming cars for roughly 10 minutes-you do the math. Basically a fuckload of people getting pulled over on their way into BRC.unjonharley wrote:What number do you put on the word "massive" amount of people being pulled over? Re: 2012 Experiences with Police
1.) A campmate (virgin) and his wife who is a doctor were pulled over when they got to about 6:30 because dust was obscuring the license plate. A dog was brought out and yes a 500 dollar ticket was given.
2.) Thursday night near the Pier an art car was being searched by a dog and at least 10 cars screamed across the playa to join in.
3.) Burn night a young girl was arrested adjacent to one of our art cars. She was handcuffed and crying in her tutu.
4.) At the Wallstreet burn, law enforcement was walking through the crowd searching peoples' hands with flashlights... They also looked in the front of my art car presumably for booze... drugs... don't know.
In 9 burns I have never experienced this. It all seemed a bit too much. And while I respect law enforcement and understand the necessity and the service they provide, 2012 seemed like absolute police intimidation. At any large gathering there they were! Deep playa- there they are again. Weaving in and out of crowds- surrounding sound camps- swarming art cars- I don't know- overkill for sure and even if you were not doing anything wrong seeing other people getting arrested and just the magnitude of their presence this year really bummed a lot of people out. I felt a bit paranoid...did not feel like a sanctuary anymore.

Re: 2012 Experiences with Police
You do not get arrested for not having drugs on you.
You do not get arrested for doing nothing..
!0 cars screaming across the playa to check an art car search?????
Anyone else see this????
Stopped for a dirty Lic. plate and end up have the dog brought in.. There has to be more to this story...
It's hard to listen to a good cop story, When you only get half the story..
The Bmorg has to pay for police.. I know they have been pressed to hire more..
But I'm thinking some of the details of the cop stories are a bit distorted..

Yeah 10 cars AT LEAST! And yes why is it so hard to believe that an obstructed license plate could get you pulled over- and as far as dogs go, yes indeed they can ask to search your car- not the only story I heard of either! I understand that if you are not doing anything wrong you will not get arrested- but come on!

Re: 2012 Experiences with Police
I dunno UJ. I was hearing from a "friend in high places" that the police were pulling people over for any reason on Gate road - obstructed plates, "unsafe" tie-downs, "suspicious activity" (lighting a cigarette)... basically, letting people know in advance they were there in force. Last year (2011) there was a cluster of about 6 police vehicles (sheriff & BLM) sitting right in the road just past Greeters a bit, one of them had someone pulled over, this seems like an upping of that routine.unjonharley wrote:Stopped for a dirty Lic. plate and end up have the dog brought in..
