Excuse me? So Burners who get costumed and pose for a group photo at a fabulous Burner event are suddenly 'creepy' and 'trashy' ?? TALK ABOUT A BLANKET STATEMENT! Did we even attend the same event in the desert?
again, see....*sigh* This "gift" is based on the idea that it is BETTER to be NOT SINGLE.
Do you argue with the radio every time you hear the context of that statement in a song? I said it before and I'll say it again (and again and again) - CONGRATULATIONS for being single and happy about it! CONGRATULATIONS that you do not need my 'gift'!
wait - didnt' you start this post by thanking us for keeping this thread so alive and visible...??? and did you say "drivel" again?? I thought Joel addressed that??? AND this 'community' seems pretty based in self-reliance, not co-dependent relationships.

urk....
Yes, I used 'drivel' again because neither Joel nor anybody else has yet adequately refuted it.

Congratulations! That's wonderful and I'm genuinely happy for both of you.

By the way, if you have any single Burner friends in the Pacific NW who would prefer not to be single, please refer them to my group. It's a gift to my fellow Burners who someday hope to be as happily coupled as you and your sweetie:

Come on, guys, Marie's a nice lady and Burn-Singles is a good group. Quit yankin' her chain.

*Ahem* Now for the plug...
I've been a member of the Burning-Singles list almost since it's inception. It's a great, close-knit group; the list is very active, almost on a par with the Dioxine list, we've had a lot of terrific events including several HUGE DATES!, Girls' Night Out on Valentine's Day this year, a chatroom that's active on pretty much any night around 9 or 10PM, and plans are underway to have a presence at most if not all of the upcoming Decompressions.

She means it when she says it's not a place to cruise for tail. You have to post an intro within a few days of joining the group, she goes through about once a month and purges lurkers...and flamers are unceremoniously shown the door. So...let's all be nice here, okay?

And Tisha...that "creepy guy" in the photo is Chef Mike McQueary, Centre Café volunteer and one of the coolest, friendliest and most charming gentlemen I know. He was one of the people who started and ran the Solo Collective camp. I'll introduce you to him if you're ever in Portland, I'm pretty sure you'll agree with me. Nothing creepy about him. You may remove your foot from your mouth now

this thread is freakin hillarious!

not only am i not interested in joining a singles group to not be single anymore, i am seriously questioning decompressing at all. i have decided to be compressed, single and happy about it. so there!

burning man was fabulous without a mate. it would be hard to imagine it being as fabulous with one, but i suppose anything is possible...nah. not possible. just too much to do and see...for me anyways. i can't be a big flirt when i'm in a relationship, and being a big flirt is just so much fun!

on the other hand, i suppose if the other person was a burner too it might not be so bad. it's fun to have someone to pal around with. hmmmm... i might just have to reconsider my original consideration. nah...i'm too lazy to do an organized singles thingy, even burner style. but best of luck to you with your board. it is a great gift to the community...

Ok, Sensei sees a solution here. I've made a list and this is what we're lookin' at for this weekend...

Simply Joel, you're taking theCryptofishist out dancing.
tisha2 and samtzu are going out for anything but drinks.
Rian Jackson is going straight to a motel with Isotopia.
Badger meet diane o'thirst. diane, meet Badger.
buckethead alien, you're off the market (married), unfortunately.
Stuart, you're off the market (also married). Also, unfortunate.

Okay... I hereby let go of the chain. I trust Diane and take her word for it. I have seen nothing but integrity in her postings.

I am a member of Portland's Burning Singles (or, at least, I was, until I started goofing around here) and they appear to be a nice supportive group of people who truely care for each other. The fact that Marie happened to land right smack dab in the middle of a bunch of smart asses with this thread is not her fault.

I have no issues with people having fun at Burning Man either single, with a mate, or even in large groups, but if I get the chance to be a smart ass, all other considerations, even couth (especially couth) fall by the wayside.

By the way, Jonathan Swift was single (sometimes) and he was a cranky, miserable old fuck... Sounds like some people we all know....

Not me... of course....

I do feel M-files site could well be a very good thing for a lot of people.

I had a fabulous time at Burning Man by my self but I do think could well have had a better time with a significant other.

I do not need another person in my life to give it definition or to make me feel good about myself. I have a fine life and enjoy living alone with my dogs. But I do miss the intimacy of sharing life together with a woman. I'm very introverted and at times that can be imprisoning. It preventing me from being as out going and "in the world" as I would need to be to meet enough women to be able to find "the one". I'm not even particularly looking anymore, but for those that are, being able to focus on people who at least have some shared interests and similar experiences increases the chances that the might find each other. It's a good start anyway.

As for the picture, it does look more like a group of friends than anything else to me. It does show that his site isn't just for beautiful people. Regular "singles" sites tend to always have beautiful fit 20 something's and ruggedly hansom early 30s men. So I find his picture less objectionable than those.

As for M-files wanting to get laid. He probably is interested in finding some one to couple up with I don't fine anything wrong with that either.

The sort of attack on his mode of presenting his site to E-playa he's had to endure is evidence that those of us that aren’t particularly socially adept need all the help we can get. His site could be of help to some people and I find it commendable.

You know if I'm watching commercial TV and an ad for depends comes on I don't pay any attention to it, if the M-file's site isn't something you need or are interested in why pay attention to it.

This thread just shows that *some* people want to "bitch", for the sake of "bitching" sake. Maybe her wording wasn't right, or *maybe* her words hit to close to home for some? Whatever the case may be, CHILL THE FUCK OUT !!! If you don't like the gift, move on, it's no biggie either way.

Oh, man, I'm sorry I missed out on all the fun. I particularly liked the "verbing" of drivel, plus the nounification of pedantic. But alas the fun is over, as it turns out Marie is on the up-and-up.

As for you ladies.. Tish you are too hot to handle and Regynalonglank wrote:

...which I wholeheartedly disagree with. It took awhile for my wife and me to get here (4 years actually) but this burn we both agreed that we'd be perfectly comfortable with the other enjoying the sexually-charged atmosphere at Burning Man. Not sleeping around, mind you, but harmless fun. I had the good sense to not scream "woo hoo!" and go run off with the nearest cutie, but in fact I think we both enjoyed the event for having that freedom (AND having the best person in the world to pal around with, AND for having a fabulous lover to climb into the tent with)

Sorry if that sounded like gloating.. should'a posted this to the "things I did right this year" thread. :-)

That's another reason why I'm glad to have started this group: Even if some of us don't meet the man of our dreams ;) we've still bonded with some fabulous women friends. And that's just wonderful in itself. :)

And see, that's exactly it. I haven't met Emperor Wolf via the Burning-Singles list but I landed right in the middle of a great bunch of people. I get the feeling that it's a common sentiment throughout the group; "Hey, we came looking for romance but waiting is just as good because the company is good."

How's that for a vote of confidence? :D

As for the razzing about the media brainwashing everyone with "If you're single you're unhappy —" Well, come on. Humans are social creatures. We naturally crave company, whether it's a cadre of friends, a lover, a mate, a family by whatever definition, or even a clique... ...so let's leave the fucking conspiracy theories out of it, shall we?

I dunno, as many burner related events as they have out here (our regional has like 2 scheduled get togethers a month plus randoms) and with a large percentage of single and poly folk attending ... I dunno, seems unless you would RATHER interact online than face to face, just going to the regular events should give you plenty of opportunity to actually meet someone interesting. My problem with online single fora is that I meet VERY interesting people ... thousands of miles away. Then I get callouses. Nope, rather meet people face to face, thankyouverymuch.

Hey, no sweat, I hear ya. Actually, I'm about as independent as they come, always have been. Wanted to drive from San Jose to New Orleans, couldn't find a travelling partner — screw it, arrange for the neighbour to feed the cats, pack a kukri amongst my luggage, give my family and friends an estimated itinerary and ETA, into the car,101 south take a left on I-10.

On the other hand...whenever my friend does a tarot reading for me, the 5 of Pentacles gets drawn as my significator. Remember that one? Richly-dressed older lady surrounded by beautiful things...My friend calls that "The Merry Widow card — everything in the world except someone to share it with." Ya dig? I know you can't have it all, but I can see why Jonathan Swift turned bitter and snarly.
