Howling at sundown
Hey was it correct to howl when the sun went below the mountain, or when the moon came up?

Re: Howling at sundown
You mean there was a reason we were howling? I thought it was just after the straight shots of whiskey that burned the whole way down. Who needs a reason. In fact I think it is time to go howl at my crackhead neighbors.Discosybil wrote:Hey was it correct to howl when the sun went below the mountain, or when the moon came up?

The wave of howls was a gorgeous sound and about brought me to tears the first night I was on the playa.Discosybil wrote:Oh, I had my share of howling too. But there was a certain time when there was howling that started at 10:00 and ended up at 2:00 like the wave.

I'm saying anything is correct or not, however since it was a full moon it would make sense to do it when the moon rises.

I saw lots of flashes but they were due to the shear amount of alcohol I ingested. I was pretty blurry eyed on the playa.cowboyangel wrote:did anyone see the infamous "green flash" ( an atmospheric phenomenon, not a comic book hero) at sunset?

I'll howl anytime, anywhere, for whatever reason, partly because it's part of my schtick and partly because I love doing it.
A couple weeks ago at Market, a fire truck went by a block away, siren wailing. A wolf-dog in a nearby truck stuck his head out the window and howled in answer, and I came back with a howl of my own. In classic wolf-style, head up, different note scale.
Out on the Playa, however, I was howling because I was in the Werewolf game, and I was in character. I have to admit, though, my in-character howls were rather...frightening, because I was playing a high-ranking Ahroun and that was her moon out there. In the game, when a character first sees the moon at night, they get a point of Rage back, and if it's either a full moon or their auspice moon they get tanked up with Rage. So here's this badass Ahroun (born on the full moon — the warriors of the race), and she's getting her whole Rage rating of 5 (out of 10) tanked up in one shot. Naturally she's going to sound mightily pissed off as well as stoked. So my howls were mixed with a good few vigourous and angry snarling sharp notes and accompanied by some rather ferocious and brutal body language.
Next year should be a little gentler, on account of it being a dark moon. Not sure of the exact phases, I'll have to check my moon phase calculator.

Yeah. It's gonna be a dark moon all week, all the way up to Temple Burn Night when it's an ascending fingernail moon.
Bring your telescopes and strong binocs, folks, there's gonna be some sweet stargazing opps next year

I saw some crazy colors over the hill on my drive in at sunset on Monday night - green, blue, red...and I can prove it, too, if i ever get my camera back from my lazy-ass campmates who packed it up with their stuff and haven't unpacked yet!
i thought st. elmo's fire had to be around water? or is it just lots of electricity in the air and something tall...?

first moon
That was when I knew I was someplace completely different from my world. Like my campmates and others that got early admission on Saturday, everybody looked to be in full set-up mode with a gnawing realization that our sunlight was about to go away. I was mentally preparing to curse under my breath when the sun retreated and then it happened.
When the first voices howled my immediate reaction was "Fucking yahoos, don't they have important shit to errect like me?" That sentiment immediately washed away when every body, including me, droping their tools as we gave ourselves over to a grand, deep howl. I was reaching out with and to them and they me. Welcome home, to the Island of Misfit Toys.

in bed, right in the middle of things, i see this white light flash across my closed eyes.
i'm sitting here going, holy shit, this is incredible, i've lost circulation this way before but never seen visions.
in the morning it is discovered that the overhead light was malfunctioning....
he he he...
ok, back to your howling....

my block didn't howl this year, and i missed it. but one night, as we were halfway through erecting the trashistan dome, two of us climbed up on top of it, howled at the rising full moon, and mooned black rock city.
oh, sweetness.

Dude! Where the fuck did you learn to howl like that? From a fucking dachshund at the dog pound? or maybe it was a Chihuahua? Wait, wait! Now I've got it! You sound like a Basset Hound! Yeah, that's it! A really, really old and tired Basset Hound! Hah hah hah hah!Alpha wrote:I don't howl. The wolf in the pic just looks at me like I've got a really shitty accent.

Now, step aside son. Let a real wolf show you how it's done:

Now, don't let me ever hear you howl that Basset Hound shit around me again! You got that?! Alright then, let's go kill something for lunch!

...but it seemed like such a good idea at the time...
A link to probably one of the best books ever written on the subject of wolves.

Yep, good stuff, and Jon Van Zyle seems worth a mention here. From my den <g>.

Nope. Don't have a TV. Looks cool, though.
You have seen Princess Mononoke, haven't you?

i grew up with wolves. they lived till just about a year ago then they finally had to be put down. -(they lived to be 16! amazing in wuf' years).
Tundra was a black timber, and Tonosha was a eastern grey. they only took after my mother and father, mom being the alpha. everyone else got the "your a dumb-ass" look from them. watching my step father walk them was hilarious. it was everything a large 400lb mountain man could do to not get pulled forward on his face. serious strength they have.
we had an agreement with the county sheriff to let us know when they ran across fresh road-kill -(deer/elk), then dad would go pick it up for fresh food for them. they have the power to rip huge chunks out of the rear honches of a deer.
nothnig sounds like those howls.
