You shouldn't have had expectations of getting "pussy" on the playa this year (kinda goes with the no expectations thing), but in the spirit of radical self reliance you could have dropped by Jiffy Lube, we could have met and exceeded your expectations.Big trout wrote:Well I'm not going anymore because I couldnt score pussy this year!!

I HOPE you were being sarchastic.
From someone who did get freaky with a really cool boy, I ain't frigid, I just wait for the magic man, one who doesn't expect, but gave me what I wanted to get what he wanted...

I'm pretty sure this thread is revived every year. Or something similiar, since I've joined the BBS in 97. This year, I will admit, a far greater percentage of the truely 'hard core' burners I know are saying that they are done with it.Tiara wrote:Burning Man was better last year. Or not.
These are perennial gripes. As a matter of fact, this thread was started after the event IN 2003
Me, I'm not going back because of the art. That simple. The ratio of people bringing unique art is going down, and I don't want to take the time and trouble to go back out. There are other, more minor reasons- but that is deifinitely the top dog.

Last year, none. Deliberately. The 'clean slate' idea. I wanted to be like the new breed of Burners.TheJudge wrote:What art did YOU bring?Rob the Wop wrote: Me, I'm not going back because of the art. EVERY other year (except my first), I would spend a minimum of a month on a project to put up in whatever theme camp I was in. 03' I was part of CarnEvil and created 75% of the 'funhouse' via airbursh on canvas with 'stained glass' windows.
So what art did YOU bring last year, oh more-burner-than-thou?
I got the idea in 97' (first year) and helped out three camps on playa with their art projects. 98' was the Postal Abode, a 9-hole miniature golf course, and a life sized flaming sheep catapult setup. So I understood right from the beginning what a 'participant' was. Or used to be.

The art was down, but what were the factors involved?
Was it because the Bmorg didn't give out enough Grants or money?
I believe it was due to the vandalism and theft related to the 2002 burn. Why would someone create expensive art only to have someone steal, distroy or burn it on them.
But one think that I didn't see was the spirit of burning man was gone or diminished.
I was reborn because I got to camp next to a virgin that was just overflowing with the excitment of the event- too much though because his was so burnt out by the time of the burn that he slept though it missing the Saturday night even though I had warned him that if he had kept up his extreme partying all week that He wouldn't have enough energy to make it to the burn.
But I'm going back and so I hope that Rob does too.
So far 2002 was the best year of art and this year was the worst with next year being much better- I hope!

You mean you were a spectator: a neophyte who expects someone else to do the dirty work, thinks the whole event is put on for their own personal amusement and takes no responsibility for their own misguided, ill-conceived, drug-induced actions.Rob the Wop wrote:Last year, none. Yup. And fucking loved it too. BTW, doing a little hard work for a desert party doesn't make you Mother Teresa.TheJudge wrote:You mean you were a spectator: a neophyte who expects someone else to do the dirty work, thinks the whole event is put on for their own personal amusement and takes no responsibility for their own misguided, ill-conceived, drug-induced actions.

No, and bitching about the lack of art or how the city didnt meet your expectations when you did nothing to contribute to it doenst make you much of a burner, either.Rob the Wop wrote: BTW, doing a little hard work for a desert party doesn't make you Mother Teresa.

Stop it, stop it, STOP IT!
You're each entitled to your own experience of the event. Each of you has done a lot of work for it. Each of you has had your life changed by it. And I don't care if Rob the Wob never attends another burner event for the rest of his life. He's welcome on the e-playa and he's paid his f*ckin dues. This silly p#ssing contest is over. Tisha2 won.
(Unless it was Woodrow, but I can never be impartiall about that.)

Not the point. This is a participatory event. If you dont like the way the city looks, or if you dont like the amount of art in it, do something about it or shut the fuck up.theCryptofishist wrote:Stop it, stop it, STOP IT!

No offense to Rob the Wop, whom I know has worked his ass off out there.

I can't help but wonder of that was due to the dot-bomb going off in the bay area. From about 96 to, oh, 2000 some of the most creative people in the world were being drawn to the SF Bay area like bugs to a lamp. I would say about 2/3 of my friends that were really into BM have left the area and don't go anymore. Most have moved to the East coast. A couple of my friends still go, but the few that are left around here got hammered so badly when the bubble burst, they can't afford either the expense of getting things together or of taking the time off work.Rob the Wop wrote: Me, I'm not going back because of the art. In my particular case, I started working at least one day a week back in May getting ready. By July, it went to 2 days a week and in August every bit of spare time that I had was going into BM stuff. Next year is probably going to be a major effort for me and will probably be even more time consuming and expensive.
As for art, I am going to try to get art out there from people who can't go. I even want my KIDS to make some art for me to take. I know a couple of people that are really into metal art and am going to offer to take some of their work out there.
And the stuff we talked about getting the newbies involved with making some art is going to help down the line, I think. I can understand your frustration. What would it take to get you and the others back? Personally, I like having more of the seasoned burners out there.

Yup, I'm on the tribe list and starting beginning of next year- I'll start helping out on the Virgin Parade/Forced Art Camp. I just have my hands full currently with two Caco events and the TriSantaCon til then. I'll also contribute some art supplies and such.geekster wrote: Next year is probably going to be a major effort for me and will probably be even more time consuming and expensive.
I think the idea of changing the preception of BM in the minds of the 'virgin' burners will go a long way towards 'rerouting' the event to it's previous individual artistic expressionism. More of a constructive way of addressing the problem than whining on a BBS.
Though that's kinda fun too.

Shiit buddy! You should come to Reno, during the week of Burning Man, and go to the Rib Cook Off in Sparks. Gitcherself a room at the Silver something-er-other casino and go to the frickin' Rib Cook off! You'll have a great time. Or wait a minute...I got it...you could go out to the Black Rock some other time and make yer own event, ya know, git some friends and some hooch and some fire works and some music and party it DOWN! That's what I'm doin' this year, yup, makin' my own damn event.
Bah! Psshhh!

The fact that these post are here tell it all! Everyone has a diffrent bitch about something. And all the die hards are saying the same thing "dont come back if you dont like it." Well guess what die hards, I dont know anybody thats going back, so the place is all yours. You can keep going till the org. has you paying to sit in grandstands with your hands in your pockets.
Why am I pisstd and let down? Because I'm one of the small bussiness operators that helptd when thay needed it.
I love alot of the people that I met over the years but were looking forward to gathering elesewhere this year.
PS. If you know Will Rodgers tell him to go fuck himself!

I guess i just never bought into the bigger-and-more-expensive-equates to better-thing. One of the best and funniest pieces of art I ever encountered on the playa was the 5 gallon jug of free mayonaise that sat in the open sun for days.
The idea behind it was fucking brilliant.
