Theme Ideas That Didn't Make It

Post by Badger » Tue Oct 05, 2004 8:50 pm

Just curious. I've heard over the years that the painstaking process of coming up with the perfect theme each year is often fraught with ideas and suggestions that end up on the side of the road for various reasons.

I've heard of a few. Anyone else know of any?

Sorry... the whole concept of "God" escapes me, but I have the utmost respect for Christ... anyone as good as he is, who can put up with our outrageous crap and not blast us to powder is probably displaying godlike attributes, but "Slap a Yahoo for Christ" just doesn't have the same.... um... cachet. Of course, "Rip a Yahoo a New Asshole, Rip off His Head, and Shit Down the Hole for Christ" is over the top...

How about "Fluffy Furry Things on the Playa"?

Or..."It was Better Last Year" ?

Art Reborn

aka Been There Done That

or "Wasn't that spaceship a flying carpet last year? And a pirate ship the year before?" (Not that reusing isn't great, inspired and creative, but it is fun playing spot the newest use of old materials).

There's a reason our unofficial camp name is always recycled crap camp. I am personally at the top of the list as the most worn out item limping back to the playa annually.

That could actually be fun. Everyone has to prepare a resume, and the info board would have job listings at theme camps "bartender" "strip pole dancer" "art guardian" "pyromaniac needed" etc.

Homeless people in the middle of intersections on the Esplanade with cardborad signs, flashing with El-Wire, stating "will work for art"

But I guess the downside would be thousands of paper resumes flying down the street collecting at the trash fences.

Okay, so now I have to think of something even worse?

Hm.
Skip "The Bodhi Tree" with the streets named after the 8-fold path. (Although, "Achieving Enlightenment" as a themic euphamism for "the Burn" has a sort of ring to it.)

Dentristry!

Auto de Fe! (Oh wait, that was last year.)

The Iraqi War! No tickets, you just hope you don't get drafted.

Soul busting poverty!

the Cultural Revolution--instead of paying for your coffee at center camp, it's a round of "critisism/self-critisism"

A Frank Sinatra Tribute

A Pharmacutical Cornicopia!

Some History-Based Themes:

Great Wars of History

Natural Disasters! ("It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!")

What the Industrial Revolution has done for me!

People that could have been famous, if they had existed.

Evolution (and/or the converse: "Devolution")
...but it seemed like such a good idea at the time...

It's only a week in the desert.

Has been cancelled (I can see the tickets and logos: Burningman 2005: Has been cancelled)

We all know this one's the actual theme for most people anyway, so why not make it official:

Pseudointellectual new-age claptrap.
“We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered.”

The 12 Days of Christmastm

er..some how condensed into 7 days.

The Burningman could be pearched on a pear tree

Gifts could include golden cock rings, or nipple rings and lactating wet-nurse stations (maids a milking) and we already have plenty of ladies (and men costumed as ladies) dancing. Pipers Piping (Extra Action). It's all there.

But all those birds (geese, turtle doves, french hens) would leave a shit load of moop and poop, they would have to be plucked and have maribou hot glued back on.

Thanks, Fishy!! At last... MY OWN THEME!!!! But, it seems to me that this is what Burning man is about anyway. Isn't it? I saw a lot of guys like me, swingin' in the dust out there! But it's great to be able to stand up and be recognized, although I didn't see too many of us standing up out there. Did you?

Personally, I am heart broken that once again Larry has passed on the Federal Land Use in the Arid West theme. Streets were to be named after the important agencies that govern policies: Army Corps of Engineers, BLM, the Park Service, the Forest Service, Buereau of Reclaimation, Federal Highway Administration, Fish and Wildlife Service. . . .
The Man was supposted to stand atop a wooden replica of the Hoover Dam. . . .
But as we all know, nature abhors a vacuum and the whole thing crumbled, so once more we will miss the opportunity to learn more of the wonderful and horrible things that the federal government does for and to us and the west. . .

Back to the usual mythopoetic entries.
