R. Crumb on Playa
Much to my delight R. Crumb signed my book at the Burn this year. He commented "Wow! to my sculptures which I exhibited at Center Camp. View the signature at www.toddkurtzman.com

I saw your sculptures- I love them! I'll bet Robert loves them too, with those big thighs and asses.

I did not see him.
But on my life I recently saw a woman who looked like she walked straight out of one of his comics. The only thing missing was Mr. Natural pinching her behind ... a behind that had somehow been crow-barred into a pair of shorts seven sizes too small. I would say she looked most like the one in the top right, however she was not exposing her breasteseseseses ... es. Illustration hopefully to follow:

It's really amazing to read some of Kominsky-Crumbs work where she's talking about how she grew up obsessing about how her butt was too big. And when you look at pics of both of them and compare to self portraits and portraits of each other. . . It's astonishing what talent can accomplish in simultaniously exxageratting and reporting.
Come to think of it, Peter Bagge and Dan Clowes are welcome onplaya too.

Crumb is a funny name.
Did you see the documentary on Crumb ... called "Crumb"? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109508/ I think I can hear Aline talking about her behind now. And Charles Crumb. The guy tripped me out the entire movie but if I'm recalling correctly I didn't think he'd 'do it.' I remember feeling a little weird and shocked by the blurb in the credits.theCryptofishist wrote:It's really amazing to read some of Kominsky-Crumbs work where she's talking about how she grew up obsessing about how her butt was too big. My brother corrupted my teenage mind with R. Crumb in his stash of Zap comics, um, back in the 70s. I think he still has those comics locked away in a trunk ...
And I have a niece who could be a Crumb woman when she wears her playa boots. She has to know about him her dad (yet another brother) was a huge fan.

Oh my goodness, we're going to have a Koot reunion! Hey joe, I just pm'd you!
I don't mean any disrespect, but I HIGHLY doubt Crumb would be at Burning Man, for a number of reasons. I don't claim to be an authority on the guy but after reading tons of his comics, interviews, and seeing his documentary, I DO know that
1. He abhors big crowds and drawing attention to himself, especially since the documentary. He's a bit of a social outcast.
2. He's that he's never felt connected to the hippies or other counterculture types who adore him. He doesn't go to alternative gatherings. He's said he couldn't stand the psychedelic rock of the 60's (or any other kinds of rock!) and he would disdain the thumpa thumpa that permiates BM.
3. He hasn't taken drugs for many years (not a defining reason for going to BM, but a possibly presumed deciding factor)
4. Crumb has said is very much a city boy all the way. I can't imagine him roughing it in the desert. He's never made any mention of being drawn to the outdoors, camping, hiking, etc.
5. He almost only wears suits. Not very Blackrock friendly in the heat of the day.
6. He lives in the South of France.
Like I said, I mean no disrespect and I suppose anything is possible, but I AM very skeptical that the guy you thought was Crumb really was. Did anyone get a picture of him at Burning Man?

In the spirit of Crumb himself!Killjoy.
I didn't mean to sound like a dick or anything. Just sharing my thoughts. Crumb is extremely reclusive and private. I remember 4 years ago there was a guy who kind of looked like Howard Stern pitching full cans of cheap, warm beer for all comers to bat at on the Esplanade. Sure enough, there were people on the bulletin boards that year seriously recounting how cool it was to see Howard Stern on the playa.
