ok, so........yeah, I get the Empire thing, I do, but there's a reason no one lived there, before mining......ya gotta have reliable water. yup, there's springs, I know. but it's so dependent on seasonal water, and the mineralization of some of the water out there makes it unusable. Out there, the winter is "way" colder than over here, and that's huge when you don't have firewood after the first year or so. and yeah, hot springs...but they require maintenance and piping...both vulnerable and eventually need materials for repair.
The soil there is gonna be marginal in most areas, though there will be very good soil in spots. Again, though, it's gotta be close and protectable.
No matter where you set up, if there is a number of folks, others will show up, some helpful, some not......so no matter where, you gotta defend.

But, finding ample water and fuel, and if you can have the added benefit of elevation differences for water (gravity) for power, you reduce drastically the need for fuel.

IMHO, you(we) find a place, and fight to take/keep it. but a good sustainable place........northern CA, southern OR.
There may well be isolated areas anywhere, but considering long term needs and vulnerabilities, it's best to try to use weather and climate to your advantage.
Not too hot, not too cold.

trees/water for renewable.
soil

Also consider where lots of animals live. Not only do they know wheres best, but, they themselves are a source of raw material and food.....some very essential. Protein in the desert might get pretty scarce.

That does depend on being able to fuel up at gas stations... They will be unattended and without power to pump up the fuel. I think. And there's no way of being sure which do and do not have fuel. Although, if you're mad maxing it, you might need a school bus. Or two. Or twenty.

and Fishy, I'd do what's right, and what you want........and you'd be safe with us!! it's not all about "big strong swing ax".......we also need people who can think clearly (your mind is beyond compare), and proposed alternate ideas........and cuss in German and make pluot vodka.

true. the Hof, is more a "zombie Apocalypse spot.....it'd not be good long term, high elevation and all.......unless all we wanted to do was eat meat.

I have several portable generators, for fueling.......and know the little secret, that, fuel stations run on 3 phase power, so a regular genny won't do it, anyway. but I do know how to convert single to 3 phase mechanically.
one interesting thing about the county I live in, is, we have tons of hydroelectric dams, and as projected could way over supply our own power needs.

I also have a 2500 watt solar array, just in case.

I learnt to fly some 25 years ago, actually before i started planning for the apocolypse. So all in all wherever we gather i need somewhere flat to land. Also, a list of people to collect along the way (airport names will do) after all a jumbo jet can't be any more difficult than a cesna can it?

I've Ben So bored All my life!! Finally I can have the opportunity to utilize my inherent skills. I always knew hoop jumping and line standing weren't legitimate skillz. It's like, being a rocket scientist in a room full of Legos.
Though all of this survival talk is nonsense anyway. There will be power and supplies and all that, just not available to the public. They've already been actively making soil uninhabitable by any seed not modified to withstand a toxic amount of aluminium. Plus once you no longer receive you dose of "treated water" most folks will lose grip. Not to mention the HARPR Program, and whatever it might be that is being planned for the FEMA camps. (sidenote; is there a FEMA camp at BRC? come in, get poorly feed, possible roughed up a little bit and pushed into a room full of other sweaty naked people? )
