Hmmm sounds nice, but a 2500 mile bug out sounds rather iffy at best for moi. I'm concerned just making it 250 miles up north once the walls come down and the horde flee's Detroit.

I know how you feel, I'm stuck way the fuck out on the eastern seaboard. Maybe we could have an east coast rally point a few months ahead of time and then trek to the meetup?

I learnt to fly some 25 years ago, actually before i started planning for the apocolypse. So all in all wherever we gather i need somewhere flat to land. Also, a list of people to collect along the way (airport names will do) after all a jumbo jet can't be any more difficult than a cesna can it?

Grai, would you mind too terribly much making a few stops at some yet to be determined locations to pick up us east coasters and centerans?

There is a book on my bucket list from the U S Army.. It has a listing and pictures of eatable plants all over the earth.. A lot of what we see as weeds is food. Tried some lambs quarter.. It's pretty tasty greens.. So I kept a few dandelions over the summer. Trimmed them back a few time so they would grow larger and deeper and picks the seed heads off.. Now it's time to harvest and see how they taste..

Just picked up a vacuum sealed can of garden seeds today..

A friend gave me four big bags of acorn for the squirrels. I only have two oak trees. He has thirty.. He is recycling half of his leafs to my house to rot down to compost.. Squirrels in Or. are transplants from the east.. Still a damn rat in my book..

you can't eat acorns direct........you have to leach the tannins out with boiling water, first.

Yeah, Ygmir, I got a batch going. Either hot water or cold water, each leaching method has its benefits.
The acorns I picked last weekend are not too bitter at all, varies from species to species.

BTW, you inspired me to finally grind up my acorns, leach and cook them. Delicious! As nutty as you can imagine, with the tiniest tannin aftertaste. I can imagine living on the fruits of the mighty oak as was done of old.

yeah, in school we did that, too.......not so bad at all.
I found, some years ago, a huge grinding "area" where many women must have sat and ground things........it is a huge flatish expanse of rock, overlooking what at times is a creek, and there are at least a dozen grinding holes.......and many have/had the grinding stones still sitting in them........I happened upon it, walking an area after a fire had burned the super dense brush in the area, which had probably kept this spot hidden for decades. Pretty cool spot.

As a general rule of thumb - white oaks are far less bitter than red oaks. And even if you are not a tree expert they are easy to tell apart by the leaves - white oak leaves have rounded lobes and red oak leaves have pointy lobes. The problem is trying to beat the deer to them as they zero in on white oak mast almost to the exclusion of everything else while it lasts.

A favorite wild plant of mine is sheep sorrel - it has a nice lemony taste. Has a distinctive spade shaped leaf and you often find it near clover plants.

I have found three stone tools right here on our property.. Two pistols and one mortar that matches one of the pistols.. These are hand held tools referred as nutters. They were used to grind enough for a days travel/hunting..

Well, I have been known to chip a few teeth intubating pt's (it was an auto fail in state testing if you clicked the manikins teeth while attempting to intubate) However, in real life, those that survived a cardiac arrest would probably give a rats ass to a few chipped teeth, or broken ribs for that matter.

Ygmir, if Grai can land at the local airport on the way, I'll hop aboard with my trust jump kit. Though I doubt my weaponry would be Cali legal though

As I understand it, vast swathes of the California law are suspended in case of apocalypse...
I'm not sure of status of the weapon statutes in particular, however.
