Re: COUNTDOWN to the APOCALYPSE
This is the law of the jungle
As old and as true as the sky.
The wolf who keep it will prosper
And the wolf that breaks it, will die.
(tumty-tumty tum tumpty tum tumpty)
Drink deeply but never too deep
Remember the night is for hunting
Forget not the day is for sleep
Wait, isn't it better to hunt mayan zombies in the day time when they sleep?
Does tumpty have a "p"?

Re: COUNTDOWN to the APOCALYPSE
I always wonder, where you draw the line? How do you know you have a real pocky clips?
A real hard rain storm where the lights go out? Time to bug out and start shooting looters and looting shooters!
And if the balloon goes up, where do I look to see if it does go up? In the western sky? On the third day at dawn, look to the east?
This end of the world jazz is fun but confusing.
Maybe we can just have a party around the end of December, cook some food, exchange some gifts, and jumble a few ancient traditions together just for fun?

Re: COUNTDOWN to the APOCALYPSE
That was the question examined in the pre-apocalyptic film This Is Not a Test.
Could it happen as in Dhalgren or The Machine Stops, with everything slowly grinding to a halt, like Detroit?
Will some people watch as the missiles sail harmlessly overhead?
Historically the issues are lack of water or disease.
=Too many people.

Lucifers Hammer was a very well done book. Easy to imagine.
Swan's Song, though a little more fantasy, too.
but, It'll probably be "The Road"..........

Re: COUNTDOWN to the APOCALYPSE
I had a stint where I was reading every apocalyptic novel I could get my hands on.
There was one about a castle in France, forgot the name. Then there was one called No Blade of Grass.
I think that we are subconciously sensing that we have conquered all there is to conquer, and that the only thing left to do is to start over.

There's all sorts of scientific mysteries to learn about. I'm not real big on space, but the depths of the ocean are barely known. Artistic forms. Social improvements? I think you're only looking at the obvious...
Sorry, Dougly.

Re: COUNTDOWN to the APOCALYPSE
*walks in circle going "la, la, la"*
Hey what's the biggest disaster you've been in?
Me, a hurricane in Hawai'i, and one in Maryland. Loma Prieta. Missed Mt St Helens by months. Mustered for the Rodney King Riots ("Fire City").
Whadda you got?
Ygmir, maybe Simon's workout plan will improve your conditioning.

I lived in West Oakland for 6 months. That was pretty disastrous. Then there was the Wall Street burn...

The acorns I picked last weekend are not too bitter at all, varies from species to species.
As a general rule of thumb - white oaks are far less bitter than red oaks. And even if you are not a tree expert they are easy to tell apart by the leaves - white oak leaves have rounded lobes and red oak leaves have pointy lobes. The problem is trying to beat the deer to them as they zero in on white oak mast almost to the exclusion of everything else while it lasts.
A favorite wild plant of mine is sheep sorrel - it has a nice lemony taste. Has a distinctive spade shaped leaf and you often find it near clover plants.

In my world there's only legible and more legible.

If my life is going to depend on ^this^ sort of information, I won't make it down the stairs.
Not to worry... the house will probably collapse and it will no longer be necessary to go down the stairs.
