Re: The Bar, Volume #4
Not too smooth yet Yggy, I just got word that my kitchen will not not be put back together until sometime next week. This is routine plumbing work scheduled by our coop board, so, makes me really mad. And sad, since it means scaling way back on my Thanksgiving plans, and frustrated, since my Mom's new flooring and carpet are sccheduled to go in next week, and I do need to arrive at work often enough to get paid...

dang MDF!! this is when it'd be nice to live closer........I could "rig" your kitchen, somehow, to work, even if we ran drains through hoses out to the gutter.
well, hang in, dang it. I hope it's better soon.

yeah, I was just about to get going but then held off as it looked like he'd pro'll'y start blaming our insensitivity for his substance abuse. I struggle at times with the whole passive/aggressive format and often fall prey to such gambits. that being said; I find myself backing off and letting some one else with a better Snark cannon smack them around.wh..sh wrote:You missed that small, security, jail window of opportunity...ygmir wrote:yeah, I was just getting ready to unleash my "really funny" jokes........Savannah wrote: People also get annoyed when we lock a thread "too early".

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
MDF - an out-of-commission kitchen isn't so bad, perhaps you could go out for a nice dinner, like Ralphie Parker's family did in A Christmas Story…
All kidding aside though, you may want to do a bit of checking around, and enlist the support of local eateries. When I was living on the east coast in the late 90's I had a tiny apartment with an even tinier kitchen, and found myself responsible for doing a holiday dinner. I booked the turkey and a couple of the sides with a local joint and then just made a few smaller things. The meal worked out well and nobody spent the day slaving away over a hot stove.
Meanwhile today's been more frustrating than usual, even for a Monday. Yesterday I smashed up my big toe something fierce (box containing commercial shelving unit fell over, the end of it landed right on the toe). Fortunately it wasn't broken, but the bone was bruised and the nail smashed up good and I'm not as mobile as I'd like to be. Ideally I should be moving a bunch of stuff between storage spaces plus building a couple things for the new space, but I've got to stay put and keep my foot elevated.

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
I think people did a pretty good job with the jail thread. Sure there was some snark, but some pretty good discussion and conversation in there as well. I only shut it down after it hit dead horse stage and became clear that the OP was only going to come back to play troll. Locking it kind of forces him to move on and participate in the community in another way, or to just go away. Thanks to all those who exercised restraint, I know the temptation must have been great.

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
I had fun reading that Jail thread too, gosh, sorry I didn't find it until after it was locked. I thought DAB's remark about jails being intentionally unpleasant places was great.
And thanks for the dinner suggestions y'all, but
around here Thanksgiving is a "Cook for Days, Eat for Minutes, Clean Up for Hours" kind of deal and the first part of that is the one I go for. Therapeutic Baking, mainly. I am hoping *cross fingers* to get one day of that this year.

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
Yep, I've been there (cook for days…), just not for that day anymore. Good luck with whatever you end up doing for the day.
Re: The Bar, Volume #4
I don't think it should have been locked.
He's clearly a burner that needs help, even if that only consists of telling him to do what he already knows he needs to do, and cheering him on if he tries to do it.
People in addiction can have huge blind spots and you can't always help, but you never know.
His comments about probation are especially illustrative.
You have almost no rights on probation, as Figjam pointed out.
Bad luck or the wrong people in the office and you're done, no matter what.
But mostly it's a stupidity test.
I met a guy on probation for many years for some minor offense.
I bet he's still there.
His issue was violence, and something else.
He would keep getting in trouble, over and over.
He seemed perfectly rational, and then would say something completely stupid.
He couldn't even pretend he didn't think that way long enough to get out of the system.
Spooky to talk to.
If we can't help the guy that started the thread, maybe it will help someone else?
Sad to be a slave to anything.

Thanks - it was stupidity and oversight on my part. Normally when in 'work day mode' I would have been wearing my Docs (rigger boots with steel toe), but I wasn't thinking and just wore tennis shoes as I was bopping around and taking care of errands. I'll try and keep my foot up when I can and drink plenty of booze, with a little luck it'll heal up quickly.

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
Hi gang, thanks for the good thoughts, the interview went well. Except for the minor point of my not having any tools, if i get offered the job i have 2 days max to get a new tool set. I have emailed the guy at my old works who seems to be stalling for whatever reason, maybe genuinely that the van isn't back in his hands to return my tools or some other nefarious reason. Whatever, I am resigned to needing at least a set of basic glazing and window maintenance tools I would say the starting point for that is about £500. May as well be the moon.
I'm hoping i get my tools back before the next job offer.
