Inverse Protestant Reformation
In case you missed it, Caveat Magister recently made an excellent post on the Burning Blog. It's titled "How many theme camps can dance on the head of a Burning Man ticket?" and makes for an interesting read, if you get the chance. I like his writing style, he raises a few interesting points to consider, and it's not often you give any thought to the risks of an inverse protestant reformation (discussed in his post). Good stuff.

Trilo, thank you for bringing the messages to my attention.
After I was assaulted by two different persons and have not said anything other than worry about what it all means; it helped to read about others experience.
And Yes, it is about identity I think.
coming to an understanding soon, I promise to say more then.

Interesting writing style, yes. But style does not equal substance. Nothing new there.

..and while not new information, I guess it's a "cute" article and the gist of it I do agree with specifically when applied to theme camps/groups. Artists/volunteers are an entirely different story.
This last year we saw great abuse of the "directed distribution" system by which crony-ism determined preferential allotment. We had camps that were claiming to "preserve the fabric of Burning Man" through their contributions and ticket distribution, but in all actuality they were sold along with plug-and-play packages such as in the case of Area 51 or again re-cronied out to whomever the organizer saw fit.
Preserving the fabric of Burning Man be damned. That's just straight favoritism. Fuck that.
Get in line, suckers.. and have some more Kool-Aid while you wait.

so it was posted, so let it be done.

As a barbarian, I treat the "BMorg" as I do any bureaucracy. If I can get something out of it, fine; if not, I get out of the way. I have ceased to dream of changing the direction of such a locomotive.
If anyone wants my advice, although it would take a blog post to get any attention: We need more official Burning Man events, not more regionals. Going to a regional instead of a Burning Man is like watching porn and whacking off, instead of getting laid. That is not a solution. We need several Burning Mans throughout the year and in different areas. Nothing else will solve the problem.

or a full-time, year round Sustainable Art Community based on the Ten Principles, with a retreat, Learning Center, Sculpture GardenZilla™, workshops, Artists in Residences, Storage and Creative Space and Natural Phenomena?
and maybe a Yearly Week Long Event (amongst others) to Celebrate the creations of such an Endeavor?

Re: Inverse Protestant Reformation
Junglesmacks - I never said it was new info, just an interesting read.
Personally, I thought there were a lot fewer abuses (of directed tickets) than I expected. Maybe I was being cynical, but on the internet there seemed to be little interest in fair, people just wanted tickets. There were a few camps that abused the program and used it to drive membership/dues, but I think there were many many more that didn't. There were also a number of abuses through artist and volunteer programs, but just like with theme camps/mv's the majority of people didn't scam the system. It's difficult to say how much that (directed distribution abuses) impacted the hoarder bubble that popped in the last couple weeks before the event (when suddenly thousands of extra tickets people had been sitting on hit the market).
