no rain yet. haven't been outside in the last few hours. (at work now) Lots of wind though. Felt like it was going to blow the house over. I have it nose to the wind now but it is still rocking.

yeah, I hope the fins work like an air cooled enigine. I was thinking having them verticle, would allow more air to flow easier.

This is my first rig. Due to circumstances I did not have much time to look or do any real research before buying it. It has low mileage for it's age and the engine and tranny seem to be good. There are other issues that need to be addressed. Most are just a matter of knowing how to do it.

At present It might be bearings. I think the whole episode where the left front tire blew may have also damaged the wheel bearings. At least that is what it sounds like to me and is the only thing I can think of that seems to match the sound I am hearing. Even without my ears in it is quite loud. Just don't have enough to have it checked right now. Hopefully I will get some overtime to get it done soon. I am getting a little nervous about driving it though.

I'd think the wheel coming off, might be related to bearings, but, not if you have a hub nut on it.
how did it come off? whole wheel and braked drum? Just the rim ?

It was just the tire. Not the wheel.

Hit a big pothole and I think it busted the cords in the tire. It felt funny after that, like you were going over a road with with regular bumps in it. I just figured it was from the tire being old and the vehicle sitting over the winter a few times and that I had just not noticed it before. A few days later I was going down the freeway and the front left tire came all apart. I had to cross 4 lanes of traffic to get to the side of the road. The wheel didn't come off though. Now there is a kind of rotational noise that changes consistent with how fast the wheels are rotating.

hhmm........I'd not think that'd knock out the bearing, but who knows.
I'd also check for a bent rim, or something that might be rubbing.

is it harmonic, like a vibration noise or a screeching/grinding?

you can jack up the front wheel and shake it at the noon and 6 oclock spots, pulling and pushing. if the bearing is bad, there will be a fair amount of play (that might also be taken up by tightening the hub nut). Be sure not to go wit 3 and 9 oclock, because you can get play from the steering, in that direction.
Also, spin it and listen, and look.

A bad pothole can cause tire separation, which sounds like what happened, and damage the rim.

It can cause bearing failure too.
If spinning it isn't obvious, it may be necessary to take the brakes off and spin it.
Sounds bad enough to spot easy though.

Bad brakes can cause bearing failure and vice versa.

Sorry if this is bad news.
if the bearings are bad, make sure there is no hub damage from the hit, or ball joint issues.
Check steering too.

It's possible for the strut to be damaged too.
Hope it's not.
I had a car hit at an angle and the rack and pinion is the only suspension part okay.
Strut destroyed.
No real body damage visible.

Yeah, BB......hoping it's something simple bent. None of it it super complicated, but, if you don't have a place to work on it, or the tools, well.........I had heard in the past of places you could rent "time" in a garage, tools and all sorts of stuff.
But, for what it sounds like your looking at, basic tools should do.

mostly , hydroplaning happens on flat ground, high speed, where water gets deep enough and your going fast enough to break contact with the pavement due to the tire "planing" across instead of sinking through the water.
Not that there's anything wrong with caution on a wet hill, but you gotta be going pretty fast to plane.

Hydroplaning is like sliding on ice, harder to get grip back than retain it.
Some water depth starts the issue.
Tread depth only matters on water, not on dry pavement.
And soft rubber matters.
Tire loading matters, just like on dry surfaces.
Rough pavement can break the adhesion.
Cornering, braking, steering, all use up a limited amount of friction.
They call it the friction circle, but it just means there is only so much grip you can use.

i recommend high performance tires for emergencies.
I've had tires that I could lock up in the rain and they would slide and still grip.
Detail- A good dry weather high performance tire will out perform an "all weather' tire in the wet.
There is a dizzying array of choices these days though.

Asd, I'm still concerned about your brake issue.
Overheating makes no sense to me.
Was it a water issue?
I would sure like to understand it.
Maybe help.

hi lovelys! did no work AT ALL today but spent £600 of company money on stock it will be my first day actually working in ages! all good so far though, everything i was worried about covered without my asking, so yes Yggi "the trip home starts today" gods but i miss you guys, even to the point of considering spending a g coming to Reno for the night in January. gettting home i did discover that a sip of jager followed by sweet hard cider (in this case stella cidre) is a very pleasant experience (<-long sentence due to grai being a bit excited about work and probably getting to go home after giving up hope)

you worry about that try hydro-planing UPHILL due to rain so heavy you cannot even see the front of the car and thats at 10 mph. this happened to me on the final leg of the journey to Vegas with MDF. I can honestly say i have never been as scared in a car as that, and i have had some "exciting" car experiences

Hydro planning down hill? When you live in a State where torrential down pours are the norm you just are ready for anything. I've run over Spawning salmon crossing the Road before, I've seen a Car throw water so hard it broke the windshield of the oncoming car. a common reason your car won't start, water in the distributor. a sure fire way to be ridiculed at work, show up late and "Blame it on the Rain!", Cause girl you know it's true!
