Bacon altar, please.
Re: Show Us Your Cults!
Idea for Art Project.
Make a Huge Statue of Steve Jobs, below his feet are hundreds of real Apple Products, like old Macs, old ipods, iphones, etc... all around the statues feet in a giant pile. then surrounding this are statues of people praying to Jobs. And of course, the whole thing burns and blows up on Friday night. That would be awesome, someone should make it so.

Re: Show Us Your Cults!
Don't forget a Dharma Initiative/Others camp (from the old series 'Lost')…
I also can't help but think someone out there will rock an alien jesus.
Maybe the billion bunny people will form up and gift peeps and eggs and little foil-wrapped chocolates and pray for the return of the easter bunny.
A twitter cult might also be funny. Worshipping tweets, and telling biblical tales ("and on the third day, the founders gave us the hashtag!" or "after the deluge of low grade clients, the gods became angry and put harsh restrictions upon the holy API") and gifting blue peeps (or a more edible bird-shaped treat) and writing/handing out status updates manually on little slates.
So many possibilities...

Re: Show Us Your Cults!
how about the drama initiative. All Drama, All the Time...
a place to go melt down and have a hissy fit without anyone passing judgement.

Maybe the Man should be replaced with Buddy Christ?

Re: Show Us Your Cults!
I'm confused. Explain to me again the difference between a cult and a theme camp?

Re: Show Us Your Cults!
Might not be culty enough, but a camp could serve nothing but mashed potatoes and mud, everyone sculpting Devil's Tower all week long.

Re: Show Us Your Cults!
Excellent question, timschapker! I think there is potentially a lot of overlap between them, but in the context of the theme it involves interaction with some highly advanced technology/culture/civilization who then takes off, leaving those who had been visited to worship relics left behind, tell amazing and seemingly magical tales, and praying for the return of their benefactors.
For some camps, the theme already fits their camp pretty closely. For others, not so much. Theme art can take many forms though - camps, art installations (of any size), costumes, performances (or costumed performances), and mutant vehicles. Plus, this year Burning Man is specifically putting out the call for portable altars to be placed in a circle around the man (not portable as in they have to be on wheels, but portable as in they can be moved in preparation for the man burn).

I KNEW that my aborted virgen de guadalupe shrine from last year's theme would somehow carry over ... Marian cults, ftw!

Re: Show Us Your Cults!
Possibly The Original Phenomenon of worship, and still very popular today though I still am quite mystified; FIRE!!!
Grossly appropriate, I know.
Customized Lighters and Match booklets, mini match statues and SKULLptures, firewood for those who have a burn barrel/spot, maybe gas for stoves, some dangerous hat that involves an open flame. obviously poi and fan dancers. too bad we have to consider safety... or I'd bring some magnesium.
also a substantial burn barrel/device ala LNT, for people to gather for prayer to this Mystic Life Giving, HotAir Liquid that can't be anything less than intergalactic.
Such a broad idea about fire at Burrning Man, and i didn't once worry about any of it being done before! Savannah aren't you proud!!!

Re: Show Us Your Cults!
I checked to make sure no one had mentioned this yet...
Firefly/Serenity cult?
It could make sense with this year's theme. (Personally, I'm just looking for an excuse to meet some fellow Browncoats and dress in my best futuristic Western gear.)
2012 was my first year, so I'm not entirely sure if this idea would be beating a dead horse.
