Nazca Lines?
Nazca Lines?
They fly over our heads, peering down into our lives 24/7.
They are nearly invisible, untouchable, and yet their message is everywhere.
Satellites are extra terrestrials, and their television message is an invasion into our physical and mental space.
I feel it is high time we let them know their welcome is at an end.
to this end, I want to make a message readable only from space, in the form of Nazca lines.

I'm thinking of using indiegogo to fund this project. the lines would be made of Dots, each a 12" disc painted black. A $10 bid would buy a "dot" in the image with your message written on the dot. Alternately, you could bring a dot to BM and coordinate with us to add it to the image.
The Dots would be laid out on the playa to form a message to our robot alien overlords. I'm thinking "GO HOME" or possibly "GET LOST" or even "FUCK YOU" if we want to make google maps unreadable in a work safe environment. Maybe the highest bidder picks? The image would scale - the more dots, the bigger it gets.
This is a very rough idea, so I appreciate your feedback.
Thanks!

feedback: ditch the stupid ass funding model.
you can do this with water, or a rake.

Re: Nazca Lines?
Satellite resolution may not be better than 1 meter, so consider that...your discs would need to be a yard across, and heavy enough not to get picked up by the wind and roll through the city like malevolent wheels of death.
Re: Nazca Lines?
lemur - A strange choice of words when you offer no options. Please suggest a better funding model.
Water will evaporate, raking will be destroyed by the traffic. Discs can be burned in the fire, and everyone can contribute something to their favorite burn.
maladroit - Ok, what do you suggest? I figure a set of black discs would be good contrast with the tan dust, could be rebar'd down, and - in sufficient number - would form shapes many hundreds of meter wide.
http://goo.gl/maps/1oVGp shows that black is highly visible on the dust, so I believe 1ft shapes would work well.
It's not enough to just say "That won't work." Please suggest an alternative.

Nobody owes you anything, be happy with what you get. Even if it's pointing out that certain paths might be troublesome to follow.

The Nazca just flipped the soil, there was a significant contrast between the top soil and the underlying soil. How did they do the Tribe marks back in 2011?

Re: Nazca Lines?
I think lemur was suggesting that you and your team consider the idea of being radically self reliant. You don't need to spend a lot of money to make lines visible from space - others have done it on the playa using water or rakes, and it's worked out well.

And for what its worth, I think asking people for feedback and then criticizing them for giving it to you is a bad move. You don't have to like or agree with what's being said, but arguing with people for taking the time to respond may not help your project as much as you think it does.

and don't just make a new eplaya account just to answer questions posted in the thread you create. It's transparent and makes some of us think you're a Troll.

Once again, it's Sputnik you want to talk to. It didn't end up working for him.

Oh look, another I-want-everyone-else-to-fund-my-art-project Project. Maybe you can set up a kickstarter with some cheesy-ass prizes like stickers or documentary downloads to lure in the rubes.

In the year 2000, Dan Miller (aka Burning Dan) plowed a 2000-ft long trace of the Burning Man stick figure with a small tractor, roughly following the alignment of the Beaming Man laser installation. I don't think he particularly cared whether people noticed it or ran over it.

Alas, we are so much more ego driven. Or maybe it's less zen, I'm a little hazy on all this.Bob wrote:In the year 2000, Dan Miller (aka Burning Dan) plowed a 2000-ft long trace of the Burning Man stick figure with a small tractor, roughly following the alignment of the Beaming Man laser installation. Rocks don't draw very straight lines.

You get rocks only if you're too poor to afford lines.
Edit: Aww it's slowing down, I was sure I smelled drama in this thread.

Maybe this idea would've garnered more support if the proposed shape were a giant penis.

I think the OP really dropped the ball on this one.
