The "new" [well I'm not using the next word]? Since at least the Neolithic revolution, women have been the drudges, doing the hard work of making sure everyone's fed, and that shit gets cleaned up afterwards, and living through rape all too often, by all sorts of authority figures--cops, priests, teachers, kings, judges, you fucking name it--and you just noticed?

Thing thing about this case is that a large amount of the evidence against Emanuele could be considered circumstantial (the jeans only show that a sexual incident occurred), and the motive is diluted by his recorded "I thought you wanted it" statement--which doesn't actually implicate him in the rape.

Had Emanuele not even said anything that could've been recorded by investigators, perhaps no rape charge could've been handed down at all given that it is a he-said/she-said incident. Semen-stained jeans are not evidence that a rape occurred. Even rape-kit evidence can be hard to utilize.

The plea deal was probably the best chance of getting an actual sentence handed down.

While this may all seem outrageous, it is to handle such cases where a false rape accusation is handed down. Many of these cases are isolated enough that it is a victim-said/rapist-said type situation. An objective judgement can't be handed down, and yes, this is a good thing to have in law. There were times where false accusations of rape were used as pretexts for hate crimes.
