Here's my faux feathered fur coat (not real feathers, no LEDs):

It turned out enormous, super warm, and owl-esque.
I used this pattern, because of its promise of being "quick" and beginner-level: http://www.thesewingplace.com/coats-kwi ... im8fan1e93
In reality, it took me about 2 months, working on it some weekends (disclaimer: I am a pretty novice sewer). I don't know if I could recommend this for faux fur. For polar fleece, it would be very awesome, but for faux fur, it was a huge pain, and I had to deviate from the instructions to make it work. I also lined the coat; the pattern is for an unlined coat, so this was pretty much an exercise in masochism.
Things that helped:
- - Shaving/clipping the fur away near the seam allowances (essential)
- Sewing with the grain of the fur
- Making a quick-n-dirty version of the pattern on cheap/scrap cloth to make sure I knew wtf I was doing before diving in on pricey faux fur
- Using an enormous stitch length
- Fabric glue (there were some places where the seams were just too thick to sew through)
- Hand-sewing thick seams (wish I'd figured this out sooner)
- Fur hooks to close it (e.g., http://www.macculloch-wallis.co.uk/Content/Products/11_m.jpg) (forget doing button holes through 2-3 layers of faux fur... those buttons you see are sewn on for decoration only)
- A good vacuum cleaner (the mess is unbelievable)
- A couple glasses (bottles?) of wine (essential)
Next on my agenda are some faux fur vests. I've already sewn the shells (SIMPLE after doing the whole damn coat project). After trawling the forums for ideas, I've ordered LED pixels and components from http://www.adafruit.com and Arduinos from http://www.femtoduino.com and am looking forward to trying to light them up!
Now... show me you fur!
