The Office Host will provide host/hospitality services and some administrative support to the San Francisco Burning Man office. Office Host? Really?
OK, I find this interesting. Here is a new position BMORG is looking to fill. Struck me as rather odd for how I always perceived Burning Man and it's mission and priorities and volunteer community etc., etc., etc. I certainly don't care how they spend their money (i.e. our ticket money), but this did raise an eyebrow. (This is a paid position.)

(Psssst. I think it's just the namby-pamby modern office euphemism for "receptionist".)

What next, Official taster? Well, at least I know now where those increases in ticket prices will be utilized.

Re: Office Host? Really?
It's neither a new position nor a fancy term for a receptionist job (well, they provide backup on reception duties). Burning Man's offices have a lot of meeting rooms that see quite a bit of action - internal department and team meetings as well as meetings with volunteer groups and outside folks (vendors, participants, etc). My own personal take (from working with Burning Man and knowing the person currently doing the job) is that they're the member of the office staff who acts as wrangler for all those spaces, making sure supplies are stocked and that people using the spaces all doing their parts to help with setup and teardown/cleanup. I'm sure there's more to the post, but that's what I've seen from my experience. The outgoing office host does a great job too, for an organization with so many things going on at any given time of day or night things run really smoothly.
Re: Office Host? Really?
"Office Host" like a more honest term for someone who does the non-clerical tasks that administrative assistants usually get stuck doing.
I'll hazard that the Office Assistant appreciates the separation.

As I read it, the Office Host wears a lot of hats, including that of mail room clerk. Sounds perfectly legitimate to me.

I always thought an "Office Host" was just a glorified go-fer who was in charge of buying, for everyone working for the BMOrg, their pot.

Back in the day when I got "dressed up" to go to work, I had an office host. Gawd, she was wonderful.

For those that like to think (believe) Burning Man is not a sophisticated business operation, take note.trilobyte wrote:It's neither a new position nor a fancy term for a receptionist job (well, they provide backup on reception duties). Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Re: Office Host? Really?
Like Trilo said, it's essentially a very busy wrangling position. For those of you in the corporate world, it's similar to a conference center coordinator.jkisha wrote:For those that like to think (believe) Burning Man is not a sophisticated business operation, take note.trilobyte wrote:It's neither a new position nor a fancy term for a receptionist job (well, they provide backup on reception duties). But lest people think it's something to enable people to live in the lap of luxury... The meeting spaces are largely there to facilitate all sorts of volunteer projects and meetings. The Org in that way functions much like an incubator for those of you from the business world, enabling these disparate groups a central, supported place to do their business. The host helps make sure those spaces are untilized well, booked properly, cleaned up stocked, etc. They are present a lot so they do get asked to "lend a hand" in many, many other projects that happen year 'round.
