Hello and Welcome... What's your name? Tell me about You...
Re: Hello and Welcome... What's your name? Tell me about You
Hi all!
After lurking on these forums for quite a while I think it's about time I introduced myself.
I'm Wayne and I'm from South Africa. Next year will be my first burn after dreaming about going for the previous 10 years (as others dream about cars, kids and a white picket fences I dream about Burning Man and the road) I can finally make it happen. I currently work as a Doctor; after spending many years in that pursuit I now need to find my way home.
I've been devouring all the reading material about BM that I can, but I'm sure I'll have some questions for you guys as the event draws nearer.
Can't wait to meet everyone out on the playa!

Welcome Wayne. I'm glad you finally introduced yourself.
You have quite a flight ahead of you. I think it's a 26 hour flight to the states.
Poke around here and feel free to ask questions if you can't find the info you're looking for.

Re: Hello and Welcome... What's your name? Tell me about You
Hello everyone, I'm Mats, 21 and live in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Finally, next year will be my first Burning Man Experience - and I can't wait for that. I'm going with my boyfriend and we've been reading several times the survival guide, FAQs and the first time guide. But I still have 3 doubts:
- My friend told me that I have to sign-up for some theme camps, and they may or may not accept us. Is that real? If I feel like camping only me and my boyfriend, do we have to sign some forms, or just buy the BM ticket and go? Sorry about the silly question, but it's an important point when you come from another country!
- I'm a DJ in Brazil, if I want to play some music at my tent during the event, do I have to ask permission, send some forms, or just follow the sound and volume levels rules that i found on the website?
- If i decide not to go with the bus "To Flame", and instead of it rent a car, i know i can park it there, but do I also have to send the car foms before de event? Or this rule only apply to mutant cars and RVs?
Thank you so much, see you next yar

Re: Hello and Welcome... What's your name? Tell me about You
No, you don't have to camp with a theme camp.
They can be a bit hard to understand until you get there anyway, due to the huge range of style.
All you need is your ticket to park your car at camp unti you're ready to leave.
DJ?
DJs are often hunted by packs.
There is no rule against playing in a camping area, but I would urge you to find an eager audience first.
Camp is often a respite from the constant noise of burning man.
Not everyone is a fan of the loud.
I hope you have a great time.

Welcome Mats, (that is funny). You don't NEED to camp with others but you may want to. That way you can pay a camp and not have to bring every single thing. Shop around on eplaya. Read, read, read. All your questions have been answered here. Or you can ask them and we will direct you towards the answer. Your first burn is always awesome. Like my father always said, 'There is no wrong way to garden'.

Thanks Shambala. Yeah, that sounds about right...It's quite a flight, but I think it will be well worth it in the end; it all adds to the sense of adventure. It seems as if most of my questions have already been answered on these forums, but I'm sure I'll have a few more before all is said and done.Shambala wrote:Welcome Wayne. Just saying hi - to see if the avatar works and not make a clumsy splash into the pool. My first burn was an experience that I will never forget and want to expand upon this year. It seems that my mind is possessed by the thought of returning and my art projects this time around (small as they are) seem to be flowing out. More later
The next morning you will wake up pretty much your old self except that a very unusual 16 hours will have been added to your store of life experience.

Hi Burners, my name is Robbie and I live in the itty bitty town of Bertram, Texas, which is about 35 minutes NE of Austin. Close enough to play tourist but far enough from all the whacky drivers. Anywho.....Burning Man 2013 will be my first experience - yes, that makes me a virgin, and I hope to meet lots of friendly folks. However, if you see me wandering around with my mouth open and my eyes bugged out - you'll know I'm in total awe and probably unconscious or in shock - please just shake me and tell me it's all real! I can't believe I've waited this long to do something like this; I'm 62 and am just beginning to experience a life I've always dreamed of - I'm sooooo happy to include Burning Man!

One of our stalwarts is from near Fredricksburg. Not close, close, but I dunno, someone who may be able to translate between the two idioms?

Hi,
My given name is Barry. I have been interested in Burning Man for along time. This year I plan to attend.
I have been a leave no trace backpacker for a few years, but this event puts a different twist on things as it kind of is a leave no trace, but you could do it in an RV.
I am a photographer/computer geek/outdoor guy. I mostly traipse around Alberta Canada in the mountains and the open prairie. I am also involved in an alternate lifestyle group in the Calgary area. I am also picking up on the Steampunk style and appreciate the Victorian flavor of the culture.
For many years I have been looking at the pictures and thinking this would be a great event to attend but my procrastination gets the best of me. This year I have decided not to procrastinate and forge ahead . I hope to meet some new people and get some great photos of the area while I am there.
I am pretty reserved until I get to know someone but I do eventually open up so don’t be afraid to say hi.
Cheers,

Hi Barry, Welcome to Eplaya!!
Have you met any of the local Alberta Burners?? There is a decent group in both Calgary and Edmonton... Every summer in late June there is a regional event in Alberta called Freezer Burn.
I hale from Saskatchewan myself...
Perhaps I'll see ya on the Playa!

Re: Hello and Welcome... What's your name? Tell me about You
I ran in the Calgary Marathon in 2012 and met a boatload of burners at some bar whose name escapes me, except that there was a pizza joint with the same name though not the same location. Had a blast, actually! Met Remi there as well. He'll vouch for the "good time" part I think.
Re: Hello and Welcome... What's your name? Tell me about You
I have not heard of them until now, but I will look up the Freezer Burn group, what a great name BTW so appropriate for this area of the worldstretch80 wrote:Hi Barry, Welcome to Eplaya!!

Not sure what bar that would be off the top of my head, I guess knowing the quadrant you were in would help. Hi everyone. 2013 will be my first experience at Burning Man and I am educating myself as fast as I can. Thanks to all of you that have devoted so much time and energy to post all of this invaluable information. I am a 52 year old from So Cal and am coming in with my 20 year old son. My wife isn't sure which of us she is more worried about.
I hope to make some contacts with all of you good people over the next few months.
PEACE

Welcome Claymore and Son. Tell your wife not to worry for either of you. You'll both have the time of your life and bring home great stories. Just the fact that you are on Eplaya means you'll over prepare and overpack. Welcome!!

Hey, I'm a chronic over-packer, even before I got on eplaya (or went to burningman, to be honest) and I really am never quite prepared. I marvel at people who put up their tent for practice... It's like another world.Ratty wrote:Welcome Claymore and Son. Tell your wife not to worry for either of you. You'll both have the time of your life and bring home great stories.
