I've been a big fan of Urban Decay in particular their pencil 24/7 concealer, their stardust eyeshadow and their Clean & Sober makeup remover, and some Ben Nye stuff. I also have 2-3 different Mehron kits. This is the stuff I use for Burning Man, painting on various sports logos and for our local community theater company that I get drafted into helping with.
For airbrush work I've become a fan of Badger's Totally Tattoo line. I've also used it with a brush in a pinch and have had nothing but compliments. I've used it to try different patterns on my lower arms and hands and had people ask about it when I went out and didn't cover it up, so far every reaction has been very positive. I've used it for some larger, solid color star shapes and such over 2 inches in size and the color is consistent, deep, and rich. Speaking of airbrush, I've applied Createx airbrush paint, in particular their pearlescence colors directly to skin...it's non toxic and the depth of color is also nothing short of amazing.
In the past month I've been experimenting with indigo ink (and some plain "Calli" brand ink that worked better than I expected) for some small patterns, and I have some henna that I plan to experiment with as well. Henna seems to be too messy though from what I've seen...unless it surprises me I doubt I will haul it to the playa.
But as good as all of the above is.... as a backup tucked away in a flight bag is a cheapo basic set from Wally World picked up on the after Giftmas specials. When it's nighttime you can get away with it for very basic stuff.

Valuable (and weirdly absorbing) knowledge for the playa.

Re: Share your favorite "playa" Makeup!
I brought a nice size bag of makeup with me last year, I only wore makeup 2 nights and it was pointless. I am not bringing any next year. maybe eyeliner and mascara but that is it.

LOL....omg Savannah that was amazing......
I did real makeup one night out there and NEVER again, it was so hard to get off, just generally very annoying. The rest of the week I did face paint but that's it, it stays on really well AND comes off super easy with baby wipes, 2 very important things. I did get a few pairs of crazy fake eyelashes for 2013 but we'll see how often those get put on....

I love wearing makeup out there (or anywhere). Hey--extra SPF protection, that's my excuse. (I do like it that there is not an expectation that I wear it, however.) Makeup comes off easiest with an oil-based remover (or jojoba oil) for eye makeup and any other stubborn parts, followed by a certain major brand of makeup remover towelettes (or baby wipes) with maybe a little extra water/a dab of body wash added, and a wastebasket between your knees to catch the drips.

My hat is off to you if you manage false eyelashes on the playa. I've seen some folks manage it, but between the difficulties of lantern light and the extra time (I've always got somewhere I needed to be YESTERDAY) I have always either given up mid-process or--more often than that--never touched 'em at all. And even when I was supposed to be wearing them for Rocky Horror.
(I normally give the lash glue about 60 seconds to get tackier and stickier, but something about playa air seems to makes the glue take longer to get sticky.)

Hmmm....interesting about the glue taking longer, I'll remember that....I've been practicing putting fake eyelashes on quickly since....like October...which is kind of embarrassing to admit LOL!
One night out there I saw this girl with these CRAZY eyelashes on that looked so cool, and so I bought some and reaaalllly want to do it, but I figure I'll never do it if I can't do it practically with my eyes closed....hence the practicing...I now own a stash of fake eyelashes hahaha
Thanks for the tip on makeup remover, I'm sure that was my problem, I def didn't have an oil based remover.

Re: Share your favorite "playa" Makeup!
I I am not really good at make up... Eyeliner and mascara is usually as good as it gets for me... Maybe a few dots above the brows. I let the dust serve as a base foundation coat. I found asking someone more creative works for moi.

This will probably be the most makeup I will wear the whole time. I love to do fantasy makeup, but I want to stay as minimal as possible.

Sarah wore eyelashes one night. She looked spectacular, but she peeled them off 1/2 through the night. She said they were excellent dust catchers.
I love the fantasy stuff but usually go without makeup. I have big plans, but once i'm out there nothing seems as important as just getting out there.

CFM-what do you use for your face? I'm 21 and still an acne sufferer... what does playa dust do for acne??
The playa dust clogs my pores and will make me break out if I dont wash it off often. I found using "Too Faced Primed & Poreless Primer" covered my pores and I didnt have any problem with breaking out. I also used a sugar scrub which helped a lot but I had access to a sink and running water in the RV.
