Help with getting BM logo on my RV

Post by jcliff » Sun Dec 30, 2012 10:54 am

I would appreciate some advice on adding the Man logo to my RV (71' Chevy Sportscoach.) I definitely cannot do it free-hand (seriously artistically challenged.) I thought making a large stencil would be the way to do it.

My concern is that I have never done stenciling before and I'm worried about screwing it up. My rig is getting a new coat of paint in a couple weeks and I would hate to put something on that can't be taken off. Do you think this is something I should pay someone to do? My RV is roosting near Reno, I live in Illinois. None of my friends there are any better equipped to do it than me.

I thought about having a decal made but she has a dimpled surface so I don't think it would stick properly.

Any guidance would be appreciated!

Wondering if a "vynal" shop could enlarge an image onto posterboard and make a giant stencil for you. Tape and paint on as needed.

Find a nearby artistic teenager. Tell them you just got your RV painted and you sure hope some damn kids don't paint a stupid BM logo on it, at the back, on the left, around 2 feet high, in black.

(On the way to BRC this past summer, in a Wallyworld parking lot the back of my trailer got some stares from a guy in a pickup. I checked the back, and the lock on the trailer before going in. When I returned, the guy was gone, the trailer was fine, but the (BRC) oval "country-style" sticker was gone...)

Pretty much any sign shop could make it for you in adhesive vinyl. That stuff sticks great to non porous surfaces, yet can be removed without too much difficulty if necessary.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

I think I'll try the vinyl on posterboard = stencil route. I think I could probably handle that! Thanks for the input!

You can buy Burning Man stickers on the playa. They are readily available from vendors at a reasonable price.
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

While you're at the sign shop, see if they can get you a bargain on a big banner saying "PLEASE PULL ME OVER!"

She didn't get pulled over this burn with the man and flowers painted on her rig... so.....

I agree, Lemur... get some spires and a lantern on there!

Dust - If you've got a bike on your trunk and you are driving on 80 in late August you already look like a burner.

Agreed! If they pulled over every vehicle that had a Burning Man logo on it they'd have a line backed up to Reno.

I found a Burner in Reno that is a canvas artist. He's going to do our Lamp on both sides and the Man on the back. Thanks for the advice everyone!

If you want perfection...and I'm a stickler about it...have the logo printed on a large sheet of paper to your desired size... Kinkos/FedEx should do it. LIGHTLY spray the reverse side with spray glue. Then, Carefully cut out the logo with an exacto knife...just the paper! Anything left sticking up can be re sprayed with glue...lightly!. Once stencil is ready, mist it with the paint. Don't try to get a solid color, just keep misting till it is. Let tack dry about 23 minutes...then carefully peel off the paper. Use the exacto blade, not your nails, for picking out paper.

Test this process first, to make sure you got it. On your neighbors car.

I actually did get pulled over in California after someone ripped off the year sticker on the back of my pink RV. All was good when I showed the CHP officer the registration, but he did say "I'd get that sticker on ASAP because this vehicle is the definition of conspicuous". True story!

Id believe it could have been a real risk a few years back, but at this point it doesn't matter what you have on your car if your headed towards BM at that time of year they will pull you over for anything they can the closer you get. Once I hit Reno I tried as hard as I could and still got stuck for 5 mph over a sign I didn't see. (Wwith a 3x5 oval BDC sticker on my bike rack. But unless your a Burner you dont know BDC has to do with BM)
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

I would concur. It's not what your vehicle looks like, it's whether or not you are breaking any laws. Having driven there and back in the before-mentioned extremely pink RV, going the speed limit with current plates and all your lights working seems to be the key.

You gotta watch your speed in the little towns. It will go from 75 all the way down to 25.

Are you talking about the year sticker on the plates?
Apply to clean surface, press down hard.
Then using a sharp edge slice a pattern crisscross the sticker.
Make sure to go all the way through the sticker.

For the man logo, use gaffer tape, make an X, then add the head to the pattern.
You can use fluorescent tape.
No, it's not a good idea to put that on before the playa.
That would be why I removed the large color sticker of Marley smoking reefer that was on the back of my truck when I got it.
Some conversations are better not held on a nevada highway.
