When he lights his streetlamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower.
When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

That a pair of footie pajamas and a bear mask will do just fine.
Also learned how to use a sewing machine! Which would come in handy for later projects...

Re: Same Attire Every Year?
Simon - I don't really do separate clothes for defaultia and the playa, either.
TomServo - that roman outfit is completely awesome! I'm not sure if you got all the pieces as a set or if you've been picking and choosing to find each piece separately, but what you've shared with us looks incredible. And a great historic period, too.
Ano - the zebra stuff sounds great. One of our newbie campmates this year was in a funk before the gates opened, he was wishing he had the chance to do some more in the way of costumes and fun attire. We told him not to worry about it, he did the hard part (getting there), and we gave him the location info on a couple of the costume camps. When he came back he was bouncing with excitement, he'd gotten a zebra striped shirt and couldn't have been more excited. Over the course of the week he'd managed to visit other camps and make friends who helped him out and by the end of the week he had a full zebra costume complete with head mask.
Ugly Dougly - I don't know, maybe. I think theme-compatible clothing is kind of like a burner fashion fad, in a way. With the exception of my cheap bee costume (which I got for an event back in SF), I don't think I've ever had anything that was much of a matchup to the theme. I may end up bringing the bee costume again this year, as it pairs up nicely with my utilikilt when I'm working (either volunteer shift or pre-event setup)… 'worker bee' mode.
Answering the general question, I don't really do separate clothing for playa and defaultia. It's all the same wardrobe, more or less. For work mode (building stuff and setup) I do jeans or utilikilt and some kind of artful tee. Mostly they were favorite band tees in the past, but over the years it's evolved to be something more artful and original designs. And most of the jeans were customized pieces too - that's another trend I expect to continue. I also will end up packing my shiny suit again plus some of my favorite steampunk attire and piratewear. I have a favorite space pirate coat that my gf and I made back in 2006, while the coat's still in great shape ideally I plan to retire it and replace it with a new design I've been meaning to work on. In the footwear department I'll likely have my Docs with me, picked them up a couple years ago and they're seriously comfortable both on and off the playa.

Yggy , what's a mankini ?
and since I am retiring from BRC this year when I went to the usual check out the SA my habit of picking up great stuff for 17 years of accumulation has got to stop ! But it is a habit , I can see that now.
no, I am not giving away those , just in case.

Defaultia and playa wear are the same for me too. Shorts and work boots. Not terribly exciting, but comfy as hell.

Re: Same Attire Every Year?
ok in all seriousness, why not try it one day?
try wearing whatever the fuck you WANT to wear, instead of what society EXPECTS you to wear...
wouldnt it be great if for one day, it was CUZ-ual friday, where you where it "cuz" you feel like it?
little kids do this.
in the morning, they wake up and decide...."Today i'm a Cowboy" and then proceed to cobble together the appropriate accoutrements according to their needs and desires.
maybe we should try that out here....in the wasteland....like that cigna commercial
i know, it sounds stupid, and some of you live where people actually sorta live this way, at least in some numbers, but for those of us out in the hinterlands, this type of thinking and action can CAUSE quite a stir.
i think we should stir up defaultia a little more.
pick a date, any date, and let's do it.
let's invade defaultia, and wear what we wear on the playa...

Re: Same Attire Every Year?
Yeah, Simon... People wouldn't bat an eyelash in NYC. Myself and friends have gotten dress up in Saturday mornings to go to the store and buy breakfast, it is def fun and everyone should try it in defaultia at least once.
A lot of my stuff is from default although I want to acquire some nice footie pjs for the playa. The tshirts change from year to year. My scout shirts and Queen of Hearts dress have been worn in default before coming on the playa... I would be kidding if I said I wore half of the stuff I brought, but I like having the option.
Oh... I actual make simple leg warmers from old long sleeve shirts since I don't always wear long pants at night. I cut the sleeves to fit from my calf muscle to ankle and they only take a few minutes to make.

I wear what I want to wear most of the time; being self employed has its advantages. But my playa costume of undies might get me arrested in most areas.

I tend to wear the same shirts from year to year. The problem is that when I appear in photos, I look like that's all I own. I guess I just need to start rotating my clothes more.

Re: Same Attire Every Year?
i gifted my pershing county jail shirt to my friend eddie, who got popped by the pershing county sheriff and got a 500$ fine for smoking a joint.
i warned him, never in public, always in the tent.
he learned his lesson the hard way, so i passed the torch along and gave him my black & whites.
i guess he actually paid $500 for that shirt, didn't he....but the lesson he learned is probably worth a lot more than that.

While we were tooling around Isla Mujeres in a golf cart, I took off my shirt and just wore my bra as a top. Since I always choose colorful bras for Burning Man, it simply looked like I was wearing a swimsuit top.

I have to wear boring, straight very business clothes in the default world so on the playa it wll be bright colors, tutus, colorful wigs and hats and lots of glowing accessories. Oh, and the giant name tag so you can find me and say hi

does someone force you?
are you being physically threatened with harm if you don't?
because if not, you CHOOSE to wear boring straight business clothes because you are afraid of what people will think or say about you or you will be financially affected if you decide to wear what you want to wear.
so lets get that straight, please...you dont have to do anything you dont want to. and you Choose your actions, so don't blame your work for this condition.
