Re: Feathers?
I wore a feather earring, but it's made of sterling steel.... It was secured to my ear with a post and back piece...Does that count?

Re: Feathers?
Unfortunately, Yes. If it is a real feather - it will dry out from the heat, and start to decay from the friction caused by playa dust. It will stay attached to your ear, but pieces of it will fall off and become MOOP.9ah wrote:I wore a feather earring, but it's made of sterling steel.... This is one of those cases, where: "No Feathers" means "for the love of dog - NO FREAKING FEATHERS"

Yeah... it's real sterling steel... I didn't know steel could 'dry out'....

Oh, the entire thing is steel?? - uh, oops. {blush}9ah wrote:Yeah... it's real sterling steel... I didn't know steel could 'dry out'....
Since it is not a real feather, why not?? - I read that as having a steel base, not the whole thing being steel. . .

Re: Feathers?
Muahahaha!! Nope, all steel. Only got one cuz the other wanted to play in the Caribbean Sea (asshole)....
I did have a virgin in my car heading to the playa who was meeting her BF. She had a feather flower to surprise him with... I made her leave it it my car/mooped it. She wasn't too happy about that.

Re: Feathers?
Maybe giving people viable alternatives to contraband will help. As for feathers, I've seen some very nice look-alikes made of painted, carved leather. I'm fairly certain the paint is sealed to avoid flaking, but I don't know if the sealant can stand up to the playa well enough to prevent paint-flake MOOP.
Another alternative is feathers cut from sheet foam. That's cheap, colorful, and has plenty of do-it-yourself appeal. I can't imagine they'd be all that durable but they are soft and huggable.

That video on the 10 principles with the presenter declining ever more steadily into pickleback-driven inebriation is the best I've seen. I believe Trilo posted it not too long ago.theCryptofishist wrote:maybe we need to produce a series of pithy videos and share the hell out of them...

If the stuff you're referring to is what I think it is, the leather is airbrushed rather than painted with traditional means.

Re: Feathers?
I think the "tribal" interpretation of this year's theme is going to make the feather issue worse than ever. I've been struck by how many burners are pinning the shit out of feathered headdresses on pinterest. it makes me double frown, because paired with the appropriation element it's like a big fuck you, my ~pretty~ costume trumps everything else. I've even seen captions like, "who cares about the no feathers rule?" slap.

Okay... I follow ya here. So the topic is "animal coverings" and the modifier is "playa rulez". So then the whole feather motif is definitely out, so I'm thinking... ummm... maybe ... leather?Sunbeam56 wrote:Lady Gaga would approve. I however, am going to eschew feathers.

Re: Feathers?
What about the search at the gate to include feathers? For real, not just a token search and a 'go ahead, take them in anyway'. Take tickets and turn back entire cars trying to bring feathers in. Advertise extensively in advance.

yeah that's what spreads it. they're unarguably gorgeous costumes & photogs are drawn to them, but then they're spread all over the internet as this burner costume ideal & emulated by the types who don't do their research (or who do but don't care).gaminwench wrote:and 'sanctioned' pro photographers refuse to photograph 'playa chickenzz'?

feathers never blow away?
tape doesn't get brittle in UV?
tape never breaks off?
tape doesn't lose adhesion (and it never gets hot there)?
tape never degrades?
so you think that will guarantee that any biologicals from the feather degrading can't affect Black Rock Playa aquatic micro-fauna, or blow out into the desert?

Even if you can assure "your" feathers are secure and will not moop..
A new person seeing your feathers might make there own custom next year..
Not knowing your method..Could make gate problems and the customer some heart ache..
