Grammar Nazis?
I know there have to be others on these boards... I find myself wanting to like a status or quote someone, but then I see it... A big ole misspelling, wrong form of a word or improper syntax. Anyone else?
I'm not referring to favour/favor or theater/theatre.

Life's too short . . . and plenty of poor spellers are fucking brilliant in other ways. Yes, errors do stick out. Yes, one sometimes one compulsively longs to edit. And when spelling or grammar is poor enough, sure--it sometimes limits someone's ability to be easily understood, or taken seriously in the business world, but making too much of it is like being one of those Burnier-Than-Thou folk who say "Where's your costume?" to a Burner in khaki who may very well have just finished building the @#$% Temple or come off of a 12-hour volunteer shift.
If I put something in my sig, I admit I'll correct the spelling (if needed).
Otherwise . . . fuck it.
I'm glad I'm a good speller--it's very handy--but that's all. It's an inborn visual talent, not a virtue.

I guess it's just me. I try to overlook the once is a blue error, but I know a few folks that will write something like, 'Is so cold outside. Is going to rain later.'

Re: Grammar Nazis?
With friends posts I sometimes see a minor error (maybe 'autocorrect' changed a word, the added extra s or d on the the end that doesn't belong or abbreviating incorrect although that almost doesn't apply thanks to SMS)... Using in and on in the wrong context hurts a little as well.Shambala wrote:Hey 9ah, what is a "once is a blue error"?

Re: Grammar Nazis?
9ah, I am a grammar Nazi as well. I understand the frustration of trying to decipher an individual's post on here, FB, tumblr, literotica, reddit, or any other public forum. An occasional, minor spelling or grammatical error I can deal with, but when it looks as though a kindergarten-aged child has written the post, I'll be honest, I stop reading. I don't give a fuck how great their point is, if they don't care enough to express it in proper English, I don't care enough to read it.

Re: Grammar Nazis?
Everyone makes occasional typos or grammatical errors, especially in the age of autocorrect. Tweetspeak and txt-speak sort of have their place in texting and on Twitter because there's only so much room to get the message across. But habitual misspellings and bad grammar suggest that the author is either ignorant (and doesn't know any better), lacks attention to detail, or just doesn't care. Sometimes how a person says something tells you just as much (if not more) about them than what it is they're saying. I agree with Savannah though. I do notice it, but life's too short to make a big deal about it.

Re: Grammar Nazis?
unjohn has got to have some of the worst spelling and grammar on this board. Sometimes I have to almost grit my teeth to keep from correcting him.
Now... let's see.
Grew up in the 30s or 40, spending some of that time at a scarey orphanage. Was subjected to abuse... Adds a very different perspective on a lot of questions. I'd look like a nasty snot if I started correcting him.
Yeah, I know, I am the official grammarnazi czar for the board. It's a sad little thing to be, actually. And at times, very very wrong.

My mom was a college english literature professor. She believed that people who read a lot are the ones who have the best ability to use correct grammar, spelling and syntax. She was very fond, however, of pointing out that authors should use whatever best communicates their idea - even (and maybe especially) when it breaks the rules.

I don't got bat shit crazy when I see it continually and I usually don't mention it unless it's an error than can make someone misconstrue the message (and that'd be via a offline message).... It's not life altering, just wondering who else had a similar 'pet peeve,'... Some do and some don't, I won't cry about it.

I have an odd facial tic.
It manifests whenever I notice apostrophe abuse and is directly proportional to the font size of the error.

I'm anal about my own posts ... and far from perfect. I tend to edit if it I catch my errors soon after posting.
I am of two minds, though. If it is important enough to do, it is important enough to do right. The other line of thought is: the interwebz r srs bzns. Or, not ... lol. amirite?

English and I have never gotten along.
At the age I really don't care anymore, plus I am working on things no "English Major" could even begin to understand.

Maybe you just have a hard time understanding what your reading if it isn't perfect.

Re: Grammar Nazis?

The spelling mistake that really steams my clams is: "lose" spelled as "loose". Sure, I can understand why people make the mistake, but I still hate it, even if I usually won't bother correcting it. I remember even seeing that mistake in some paper out of Harvard. Argh!
One spelling correction I will make: when someone spells "segue" as "segway". The former is a smooth transition; the latter is the branded name of a two-wheeled, motorized, personal vehicle. I remember correcting a friend on that. He was so shocked and pissed at himself for spelling it that way for such a long time.
