I've noticed, how gate's trying to emulate DPW. Must be a strategic move by the ORG.

Re: whats with the hippie/raver hate
I'm not in either department, but know plenty of people in each and see them out and about at events, meetings, etc. I don't notice any kind of emulation. They're both similar groups (in that they help make Black Rock City go), but otherwise seem to have their own unique identities.
I find it odd that if you saw something that seemed like emulation, you'd think that it "must be a strategic move by the org." Why would emulation have to come from the org? And what's the strategic move?

This confuses me, does nobody get the cleaning buzz anymore?bubbavic wrote:I'm a raver and proud to be one. That doesn't mean I condone how the stereotypical raver acts but then again, I don't condone how some hippies or frat boys or even burners act.
I'm a raver because I love the music. I love to dance. I love the freedom of expression.
This may come as a surprise to some but a lot of what real ravers believe in come very close to the ten principles. (caveat: yes ravers moop like crazy and that part pisses me off) As a matter of fact, the entire concept of PLUR is what helped draw me to raving in the first place...call it corporate zombie culture shock. Inclusion, Gifting, Self-Reliance, Self Expression, Civic Responsibility, Immediacy and Participation these are all things that all of my close raver friends believe in and practice AT RAVES. (obviously, we're not candy kids but even that sub-group has its values). So what a wonderful surprise to find that there is this burner community that has so eloquently espoused those principles and more into its own subculture. What a sadness to find that not everyone in the burner community is as tolerant or accepting as one would hope.
As a burner/raver/fucking human being, I participate, I contribute, I party, I de-moop, I share and all that I ask is not to be labeled until you get to know me.
And for the record, I fucking HATE dubstep.
I say round them all up and set them to picking up the moop about the place, sense of achievement should bring them comfort when they crawl under a rock to die for a couple of hours until it's time to party again.

Re: whats with the hippie/raver hate
I think it is truly a wasteful way of thinking to categorize a specific group of people into a stereotype. Not everyone is a kind, decent, or good person, but I believe that most people have something to offer each of us and shutting down an entire group of individuals based on a stereotype (whether its based on race, subculture, gender, etc.,) is dangerous. Haven't we learned by now the outcome of hate?

Re: whats with the hippie/raver hate
Sure, but it requires vigilance to avoid projecting shame and to avoid being jealous. And then there's mistaking sarcasm for honesty: sarcasm only works in an environment of honesty, so sarcasm all the time is worthless. I suspect a lot of people who post think they're cleverly feeding sarcasm, but it's past its saturation point.nildogqt wrote:I think it is truly a wasteful way of thinking to categorize a specific group of people into a stereotype. Whenever I read "[the group] sucks because they are all [the reason]" I find it comforting to rephrase it "I possess the traits of [the group] I admire, but am deeply ashamed that I am often [the reason]." E.g. "Hippies suck because they are all lazy" becomes "I possess the traits of hippies I admire, but am deeply ashamed that I am often lazy." It's a way to externalize one's own problems.
The vigilance is to test that rephrasing on yourself. To look deep and find a better reason. And to know all generalizations are fallacy.
May your deeds return to you tenfold,

Re: whats with the hippie/raver hate
Or it could just be that they are potentially potent threats.
The hippie lazy sponge thing, well, someone who comes by and eats your food and does no work and is inadequately prepared so you have to take care of them--that's a burden and interference with your burn.
Ravers? Well, many of them don't show up for the burn, just for the dance camps. And that gives the dance camps a sort of weight, a gravitational pull, distorts the meaning of the burn for others. And so many of the ravers are so unaware of the rest of the burn that they do not know a thing about LNT, which makes them a potential threat to the event as a whole. (Just look at the MOOP maps at 2 and 10 o'clock.)
In which cases the "hate" serves to define the community (we're self-reliant, we leave no trace) and the public expression on this board serves to warn newbies what the standards are and scares off (we hope) those who will not conform.
Sure, shadow projection maybe be part of it, but something that is so persistent probably serves multiple functions.

Re: whats with the hippie/raver hate
I have to say . . .
The ravers are starting to get wise. We were raver fishing last year, and caught fewer than we used to. We could see them judging as to whether they were being baited or not.
Booooo.
We will have to step it up.
