Last Temple?

Post by Rah-Rah » Wed Oct 13, 2004 7:56 pm

I heard a rumor on the playa that this was David Best's last year to build the Temple. Is this true? If so, is someone else going to take over? The Temple has always been a special place- I hope it doesn't leave us.

From what was put out in our regional meeting, David will be working on a different project. There will probably be a temple but David isn't planning to do it. Someone else has offered to do it for 05.

I heard the same rumor last year about there wouldn't be another temple...and lo and behold we get another spectacular piece of art. Part of me would hate to see it go...they are beautiful works and they've become the defacto "burn" for those who hate some the dog and pony show, ego stroking pre-burn circumstances when the man gets lit. Yet not having a temple would put the focus back on the man or on other projects that might have been overlooked or put off due to all the attention David Best's projects commanded. It could force the org / artery to put more interesting things out there to draw attention besides the temple. And on a side rant, I'd like to see art behind the city too (like on the road to the airport / dpw compounds, and in the areas between the border fence and Sedna) ...to direct traffic to other parts of the city besides center camp / the esplanade / and the areas beyond 10 and 2. I've heard the org pumped a lot of money into the temple, without it sucking up those funds maybe we'll have more smaller works instead which won't be a bad thing.

Well, I will pass along what I heard since it was said in an open meeting with no mention of it being private or hush-hush or anything.

Two people in the group had spoken directly to David. Both reported that he is not going to be doing a temple in 05. One of them said not to worry, that someone else had stepped up to do the temple in 05 and had worked with the temple crew this year. That is all that was put out. It might be performance art. That's always possible.
