Re: whats with the hippie/raver hate
It's perfectly fine to say "no thank you" and smile when offered a gift but consider how you feel when you can gift someone else something that might mean a lot to you. You know that feeling, we all do. Maybe accept the gift and make the giver happy and then you can re-gift and make yourself happy. Win-Win.canexplain wrote:The last couple of pages have cracked me up. Real ? I am a hippy I guess, but I have never felt good about taking anything from anyone. Of course, every situation is different and you probably wont want to accept the bent bottlecap from the uber drunk shirt cocker staggering down the street, no matter how much "good luck" it will bring.

Re: whats with the hippie/raver hate
The gifting culture at BM is good. I, however, sometimes do not accept the gifts that have been offered to me. Perhaps I have no way of carrying it. Or more likely, I do not have any use for the gift offered. I am always shocked at the amount of hostility I get when I do not accept a gift. Why would I take something that I am just going to throw away?? I is not a personal thing, my reasons for not accepting are quite practical...canexplain wrote:The last couple of pages have cracked me up. Real ? A gift, is not a gift if it is forced on someone.
I guess, what I am saying is: Gifting is good, don't expect everyone to accept your gift.

Ditto, to Rice.
And canexplain, if you reverse it from Hippies do X, to We call the people who do X hippies, you might see more of what's going on. Like I said upthread, "hippies" are a threat to personal enjoyment of the burn. Imagine what day-to-day life with a lamprey is like... Okay, who wants to spend all year getting everything just so, and then someone who cannot or will not take care of themselves eat your food, drink your water, and otherwise sucks up all your attention because if you don't keep your eye on him/her s/he will break something.
And that is (one reason) why we hate hippies.

So why co-opt a word that means something different? "Freeloader" is the word you're looking for.theCryptofishist wrote:And canexplain, if you reverse it from Hippies do X, to We call the people who do X hippies, you might see more of what's going on. And that is (one reason) why we hate hippies.
My view (without consulting Wikipedia) is the 1960's Hippie movement was a tangential implementation of communism in which each individual brought the skills jee was good at and that jee enjoyed doing. But the necessary requirement of communism's social contract is that all individuals share their skills; hoarding (which is a healthy response to scarcity) is poison to that requirement. So the best the 1960's hippies offered was a realization of an abundant world, but they failed to realize that growing up believing in the artificial scarcity of capitalism in an abundant world led them to hoard their skills. Hence, the lazy hippie model that resulted.
So to me, hating hippies is like hating an abundant world of sharing; to say "we call lazy people hippies" is an insulting oversimplification.
(And in perusing the Wikipedia article, I don't think I'm that far off base, although I think only a tiny number of Hippies in the 1960's could characterize their lifestyle as such a direct political and social ideology.)

I agree. But it may be difficult to change an established usage. And then there is the apparent aversion to bathing and such, as Doc mentions.Zhust wrote:"Freeloader" is the word you're looking for.
Say, is "jee" a word of your own, or is it coming into general usage? It is certainly needed -- I've been using "they", which is rather awkward.

The distinction I draw between a freeloader and a hippie is that while the former is content to take something for free, the latter will take something for free -- and simultaneously complain about who provides it.Zhust wrote:"Freeloader" is the word you're looking for.

I witnessed this spare changing dead head shell of chick pull this off in grand fashion ... she was panhandling to some dudes with a nitrous balloon. They declined her request. She starts going off that if they had money for nitrous they should have some change. They told her someone had given it to them. So, she suggests they'd be happy to share the 'free' balloon. Much to her surprise, they handed the balloon over to her. She proceeded to suck a big 'ol hit and in a fully nitrous affected tone said: "this shit shit is full of sulphur".BBadger wrote:

And crashed to the ground Burger King cup of spare change spilling all over the parking lot. Her two companions took that moment to cuss her out and bail.
I just stood there wondering what had just happened.

Whether or not I put the quotes around "burner" I regard it as a provisional identity. However, do something enough and it becomes... familiar.
I think the event's origin in San Francisco of the 1980s goes a long way towards explaining why it was that particular word that was chosen... By that time it was long after the summer of love, and that was a shadow no alternative scene or counter culture wanted to be in. Also, I suspect there was a lot of punk influence...
