You folks have serious winter up there Rice. I suppose it makes you appreciate the summer all that much more. Stay warm sir!
@Elliot: did we ever get an ETA from our expeditionary party?

delle wrote:Painful to read your story Rice. Sounds like something I might have done tho I'm a bit better shod than you are this year, with a full 4x4 and really good tires. (The used Jeep and new tires being what I got instead of a trip to burningman last year.)
I was relieved to hear of your weather conditions. Wondering if you got the Extreme Cold that we have had for the last week (as low as -40 with windchill). Any time exposed in that is brutal.... Today's -15 seems almost balmy in comparison.
I was also a bit surprised to hear you're running 4-seasons. Knowing that your weather conditions can run nastier even than ours in the winter, I'm kind of surprised that your province hadn't yet experienced the legislation we did 2 years ago outlawing anything but REAL snowtires for the winter months.
I sold some -50% tread winter tires a month ago on Kijiji just before Christmas -- took less than an hour for both ads to be settled and pulled. Several people called after the sales -- desperate for truck tires at a reasonable rate. Damned things are Expensive!!!
We just got out of a couple weeks of -40 weather... -10 is T-shirts & shorts weather in comparison

It was like driving off a road into a snow-filled ditch... yup, I'm stuck. {and I am a dumb-ass too

Winter tires are still a driver option, no legislation yet. My old Honda had Winter tires & rims with studs (amazing traction

My vehicle is a good city/highway ride. except for last night, I have never had an issue.
We get a lot of cold, -30 to -40 windchills are not uncommon. Not a whole lot of snow, lots of blowing snow, a bit of frozen rain. So, 99% of the time a all-wheel ride is good. In the winter it is quite dry here too. Very different from Southern Ontario in that aspect, they get more humidity & much more snow than us, but typically have higher temperatures...
its -5 right now and probably will be -30 by Wednesday - meh

I like challenges. I love winter! One can dress for the weather, anticipate possible needs and be prepared. Kinda sounds like getting ready for a burn??
Self-reliance is important when failing could mean death. If its -40, and I am stranded on the side of the highway overnight - I will be fine

We do not get earthquakes, tidal waves, hurricanes and such... I'll take a little cool weather over that {smirk}

Haven't heard anything about our Gerlach adventurers... Hallooo???

The Expeditionary Force is expected to reach Gerlach around 3 PM. I'm standing by to take screen captures. They may try to telephone me, but I'll be glancing at the screen every couple of minutes in case they cannot get a cell signal.
I know... I do have other things to do. But I enjoy "being a child again" once in a while.

Yes, Pacific Standard Time all the way to the Utah line.
And Triken just telephoned from Sparks (Reno). There are seven of them, and they are leaving now in two cars.
Edit: So closer to 4 PM in Gerlach.

I'm in CST - (Central Standard Time) without Daylight Savings, ever - so I like to double check & make sure I do the time conversions correctly.
I'll be online around then as well...

yah, I am a bit jealous of anyone who can easily make that trip. (Too far for me to do by car in a weekend (24 hour drive to Gerlach from here

Thanks Elliot, so a couple hours from now, Haha!
Rice, I can barely fathom -40°. When it hits single digits here, as it can at night during a cold snap here, it gives me pause, as it becomes something with a sense of real danger, to be respected. But -40!! Whoa! I appreciate taking that on as a challenge though.

I have learned to respect Nature. In -40, you can get frost bite in as little as 10 minutes on any exposed skin... So, when it is that cold - I dress for it or stay outa it completely.

omg

I've extracted them, by hand imported 15 and aligned them in preparation for cropping.

I was suffering through -30 in recent days.
What a wuss I've become.
I used to go camping in -35. Now I don't like walking to the car in the parking lot...
And now we'll be above freezing on Wednesday!?! wtf?
Of course the snowblower was repaired and just delivered tonight.

Good Morning!!!
it is a beautiful frosty morning here - Ice fog over down town and completely clear on the east side.
Coffee = Good - although I wonder about having 2 cafe americano's before 9am
It is still nice, 8F (-13C) with the wind chill, which is completely awesome. Only possible issue is that when it warms up to around this temp, the darn frost comes up onto the surface of pavement (and cement to a degree), so driving can be a bit more interesting if one is not paying attention
I hope everyone has a day that is filled with love and excitement!!

Hi Marty!
dang, I didn't take "party" pics.
Hopefully someone did.
my room was top of the building, on a corner, all glass! so, I'm sure the street entertainment value was there, anyway.
Here's a photo from the playa expedition. I was "bracing" there,to say the least.
