Now that we're on page to can we get to more important matters? LIke steaks. I think we need a roster--who's coming by my camp on which day to feed me steak?

I said "steak" and I mean "steak". Ygmir might need the other, but I don't.

Uh, oops!! {blush} ... As he carefully replaces the gear from his vampire management kit. (Coffee NOT working, brain still fuzzy {sigh} Sorry!!!)
I have only met a couple ePlayans in person, I am hoping this year to at least drop in and say "Hi" at the Meet & Greet. Guess it all depends on when the PG&E parade/party starts and if I have wheels that simplify my travels around the playa. (No CORE for our region this year to mess me up).
I wont be able to offer Steak, but perhaps a drink??

For the record, I operate on opposite steak time on the playa. Early morning strip steaks.

FIGJAM, any particular reason you went with 3/8 rather than 1/2 lag bolts?
Have you bent any of the 3/8 bolts?

None have bent and the 3/8" fit perfectly through a tarp grommet.

Re: Rebar/stake questions
Would these work when securing down a hexayurt? They're 10 inch long 1/2 inch galvanized anchors. I liked them because they're already pre-bent which would make them easy to pound into the ground.

How long should they be? At least 18 inches?

14 to 18 depending on how many you use.

Re: Rebar/stake questions
Ok great I think they have that length. What about the design? Is it possible that the flat part will twist towards the tent (I plan on pounding it all they way flush with the ground, pinning the rope underneath).

Re: Rebar/stake questions
Virgin here. Reading all the discussion about rebar, lag bolts, tent stakes, nails, etc. I like Figjams lag bolt solution, screwing in the bolts sounds much better than pounding them in, and removing sounds easier too. Will these work for a shade structure (30 x 50) or will we need the dreaded rebar?
Re: Rebar/stake questions
Rebar or lagbolt are your choices.
- Rebar: you need to learn a reliable technique for getting them into the playa and easily getting them out. What's best will depend on their size (length and thickness). Search.
- For as many as you'll be taking out of the playa, if you go rebar do look into the DIY custom lift/removal bars people have used successfully on the playa. Search.
- You will NEED to cover/protect the exposed ends in some manner (or candy-cane style) to minimize, or hopefully eliminate, possible injuries sustained on exposed rebar.
- Lagbolt: for that many, you'll want the impact driver types discussed in the lagbolt type thread https://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic ... 77&t=68556
with a mind to knowing how much of a driver you'll need, and how much charge for the number of anchors you'll be installing/uninstalling.

I don't know why rebar is dreaded. I use it for my shade structure (I can't use lag bolts, the legs slip over rebar). I have a nice heavy mallet that does a fair amount of the work when pounding and it's easy as pie to remove them with a pair of vice grips. Just turn until loose and pull straight out!
A lag thingie sounds fab, but I don't have access to power, so I use my own human strength to get the rebar in. (and I am one on a team of two, so we share in the pounding)
Rebar is cheap and easily available at any big box home improvement store. Mine stocks all sizes cut into 18 inch length. And if they happen to be out, they are happy to cut down a bigger one into pieces for me (maybe my female charms help in that department).
In dust we trust.

Re: Rebar/stake questions
Mine are 18", but these are what most people are using.
http://www.fastenersuperstore.com/produ ... lag-screws
This size fits perfectly through the grommets on my tarp, and with a big drill, and socket I can just zip them in and out of the playa without any pounding or prying.
Get some chain that a lag bolt will just fit through a link.
Cut a bunch with with just 2 links.
Like this.

Now my vice represents the playa with the lag bolt screwed all the way down, leaving the extra link to ancore rope, rachet straps, bungees, or your loved ones to!

This way there are no sharp edges of angle iron sticking up as a hazard!!!

Re: Rebar/stake questions
The playa was so forgiving this year you could pull your rebar out with ease. We got away with a few less rebars on the tents by tying them to the shade structure and of course using the car tires as 2 tie-down points.

I guess not where I was camped (5:15 J). Monday on a walk to the JOTS I came across a man using all his energy to pound rebar in every direction to get it loose. I asked if he had vice grips, he sheepishly told me "no." I told him I would be right back and returned after a brief detour with my vice grips. I showed him how easy it is to twist and pull. He said he will add those to his tool list for next year (he better!). Then a camp right behind us asked if anyone had vice grips, they knew the secret, but forgot to pack them! oops!
My mallet, vice grips and gloves are essentials. They stay packed in my shade structure bin.

Re: Rebar/stake questions
Yup.
Had to teach the camp across the street the vice grip trick after they spent 20 minute trying to beat on it every which way.

Re: Rebar/stake questions
I just found the cheapest 3/8" lag screws I've seen online, without buying a box of 50. Just over $1 for 14 inch ones. While I'd love the 18" ones that FIGJAM mentions, 14 seems to be good enough so far.

FYI: These say "zinc," so they may just be zinc plated, so they may rust quickly out on playa. We'll see.
