Let's break the world record for longest soul train!
Hey all of you amazing people!
The current world record for longest soul train is held by only 291 people and is held by Philadelphia. We can certainly break that record at Burning Man. Our camp has a sound system. How should this happen? Should we go down the 6 o'clock ave? What day would be best? Who wants to join?

Re: Let's break the world record for longest soul train!
I've got a couple of ideas.
* List your record-breaking attempt into the What/When/Where guide . . . check the main site in May or June.
* List a theme in the WWW and in this thread, but don't make it mandatory (people like theme costumes or colors . . . maybe funky 1970's style or something).
* Alert your neighbors the day before, and (if they seem into it) an hour before, then turn your MC loose.
* Attempt this no earlier than mid-week (so people have a chance to arrive & read the WWW guide) and not in the hottest part of the day . . . i.e., maybe 3 or 4pm. Remember that most people aren't wearing a timepiece at the Burn, and "Playa Time" might therefore be your biggest challenge.
* Just in case . . . be ready not to shatter the record, and just have fun.
If you actually want to break a record, you have to be able to film it and prove your numbers, but I imagine you know that. It would seem difficult to get everyone on film unless you have a photographer up high somewhere. (And then, how mobile will they be? That's a challenge).
Finally, you're going to film people for a project, you need to go here & get permission. There's a deadline . . .
http://www.burningman.com/press/press_apply.html
Good luck!

Great Advice! Thank you! I agree, "Playa Time" might be the hardest thing about this event. We have a person lined up to shoot video, getting them up high enough might be hard... We will definitely have fun. It's all coming together!!

Inferno, a soul train is a whole bunch of people dressed in 70's style dancing to funk in a line. Mostly a lot of fun.

There's a deadline . . .

Re: Let's break the world record for longest soul train!
Lordy, lordy, lordy. Ok. Here's what a Soul Train Line is: back in the 70s and 80s there was this show on called Soul Train, where (mostly) black teens got down to the latest grooves on national tv. It was truly groundbreaking, as there was nothing like it on the tube. Only lily-white American Bandstand was available to learn the latest dance moves...until Don Cornelius launched the show that became known as "the hippest trip in America." The highlight/centerpiece/climax of the show was when the dancers would form two lines facing each other, and as people neared the front they would dance down the middle and show their best moves. It's not a conga line, it's not a daisy chain, it's

Re: Let's break the world record for longest soul train!
In 2011, our camp had a block party in the street and did a soul train with about 30-40 people in each line. We played Jungle Boogie. I definitely want to be a part of this bigger one in this thread. Sounds fun. About the video, I notice that there is a lot of equality in the dancing between the sexes. This is back when empowerment was a big part of the scene. Now it seems to be aggressive dancing by the guys, and coy posing/sex moves by the girls.blujazz76 wrote:Lordy, lordy, lordy. Ok. I do know that a number of conditions need to be met in order to break a Guinness World Record, and that anyone serious about it needs to research what exactly those terms are and document it, so they can prove they've done it.TomServo wrote:Where's the One Mile Clock Guy when you need him? Here's something fun to think about when you're trying to fall asleep at night: how many records have been broken by accident?
