sorry if I upset folks with my tale of the skunk.....sometimes, I just gotta spill stuff, and well, among friends seems the best place. I don't take death or killing lightly, but dang, I'd want it, if I were in that bad a shape.
Yeah AntiM: I hope some of the lilacs take.......it'd be so fragrant in spring, since I planted them in a row, like a hedge.
Starting to get excited about the Equinox........oh boy.
if anyones coming last minute, let me know.

Pretty blooms, ygmir. I know the skunk resolution was not something you'd take lightly, and it's the sort of weighty event that friends can help share.

Anyway, Ygmir, I am glad that, on your skunk safari, you brought enough gun. Kudos!

Thanks for the breakfast, (((Misa))) !!!
Where is that
*dials ECM to max*
I thought I would have a day off today, but, instead I have to pack & leave town; Mom's Alzheimer's is hitting a new phase.
(((Yggy))), good on you for a merciful dispatch. I hope you washed everything in hot soapy water, in case of rabies?
(((Fishy))) we can't all give back exactly what we receive, since we usually need help at our weak points. You give quite a bit from your strong points; believe in that. It all evens out.
(((HUGS))) to AntiM, and (((everybody)))
Love you guys.

dang, sorry MDF............for the changes in your life.
and, well no, I didn't wash anything......I handled it with a rake, then used a board to put it on the roof of the container, so it can decompose on it's own. Problem with burying, is other critters tend to dig them up.
Does that virus survive without a host? or for very long?

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
Rabies is transmitted through infected saliva (and (rarely) brain tissue). Animals with rabies tend to spill a lot of saliva "foaming at the mouth" so I would wash the rake, the board and of course my GLOVES and hose down the area where the animal had been with lots of water. You don't need to chemically disinfect the area if you dilute the pollution adequately.ygmir wrote:*wanders in, makes CCCC*

Dead bats have been shown to be contagious; not sure for how long. I have never read anything about infection from a dead fox. Keeping the carcass away from Clyde is a great idea. He has been immunized against rabies, yes?

Barbie and Clyde got into it (you met Barbie, right MDF?) and neither was worse for wear, though Clyde got the worst of it. So my hunch is yes, he's been immunized.

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
in fact I'm taking Clyde to the vet on Saturday for a booster. I can't remember when his last rabies shot was. The skunk showed no signs of "foaming" or the like, was not wet. I know that means nothing, but, well.
"gloves"? huh?
I'd think a night at or near freezing would kill any virus? but, I'll go check the are the skunk was. maybe some bleach water.
no hose there, and too far to reach.
and yeah, Doc unleashed his "hell hound" on my poor diminutive, gentle (much like myself) Clyde, and Clyde did indeed take a whoopin! but no damage.

Hugs MDF. Much love goes with you.
Gooood morning everybody!
Mmm, rabies. Even though my indoor critters are indoor critters, I dutifully get them immunized.
I've been immunized against bubonic plague by mistake. That was interesting.

If I remember correctly, there was a Clyde in a Clint Eastwood comedy movie -- a pet orangutan. Eastwood's character broke into the local zoo so Clyde could get laid.

ygmir wrote:*wanders in, pours Becherovka, sets bottle out to share*
Hi gang!
so, I planted about 50 lilac cuttings.........from a beautiful, old lilac tree, it makes super dark purple, very large flowers, so I'm hoping if any of the cuttings take, the flowers will be the same.
I had to trim it to put up a deck railing for a friend, and didn't want all the potential to get shredded, or burned, so took the limbs home and clipped all sorts of size and shapes of cuttings, hoping a few will "take" by fortunate accident. If they all take, I'll have two beautiful, 30' hedges of fragrance!!
and speaking of fragrance, I had to kill a skunk today, as well. as I was raking my driveway I saw (what I've been smelling for a couple of day), which was a skunk, laying half under a storage container. Thinking it was dead, or wondering, I tossed a rock near it, to see if it moved......it flinched, but didn't move. this being the middle of the day, and the skunk being pretty much in the open/visible, I knew something was terribly wrong, either severely injured, or more likely, very sick (they tend to carry rabies and distemper in this area).
So, I scampered back up the hill, got a shotgun and went back.....it had not moved. So, I dispatched it, in what I feel was the humane thing to do.
It had to have been suffering for a day or more, since I've been smelling it for that long. I always second guess a decision like that......but, saw it as what to do. End the suffering, and not endanger any other animals in the area who might get exposed.
I did offer respects, and wishes for an easy transition, for the poor little creature...........dang..........
*slugs down shot, pours another and heads to ROS*
You did a good thing. To end suffering can sometimes be very painful. It was good you had shotgun. I once had to use a large rock to kill a suffering animal hit by a car...It was horrible.
Good luck with the lilacs. I little knife nick at the swollen bud areas will often help it to root. When I attempt to grow cuttings, I sometimes put them in a jar with cuttings from willow trees. Willows release a chemical that is probably similar to a rooting hormone, and facilitates rooting of other species. In Canada, where I live, almost anything will root in the springtime. You said the lilacs are already planted, just thought I'd share my love of plants.
My two dutch grandmothers could grow ANYTHING. (I wonder if they could have helped me to grow the medicinal marijuana I need)
When I walk through my garden at least half of my ( many ) plants are cuttings or divisions from family and friends.
Plants come back to greet me each spring, reminding me of fiends lost to time, or some that have passed away. Life is beautiful, yet fleeting.
Man, I'd love a cup of tea with a slice of coconut cream pie!!
