(hops down from the rafters)
Wish I could have been there too. Anymore I'm thinking it'd actually be more realistic to take a weekend and fly off to an event like the B.E. in Nevada City than it would be to find all the time off to make it to the Burn. If we drive to Burning Man (which we've always done) it's pretty much a three week commitment by the time we pack before hand and unpack after getting back.

merci, Le Chat...
If I may, I'll help use up one of those rums!

I realized too late that we could realistically have been able to drive (8+ hours each way) to the B.E. in Nevada City, since I didn't have to work Friday. Next year, it'll be deliberately planned. (The Hof party last summer was So Worth the drive!! and the Reno gathering was SO Worth the trip!!!) I just absolutely LOVE this crazy family!!!

Next weekend, we're going to a 'fund-raising' burny thingy in Scottsdale, by Phoenix, and the following week for four days to 'Howling at the Moon' in Western New Mexico, then in early May to Saguaro Man in Eastern AZ. And, of course, we Did get tickets on the 13th of Feb. for the Real Thing.

I really hope to meet you and your sweetie this year on the Playa. You will, of course, be at the Wednesday Meet & Greet at BDC&WB?? I wouldn't miss it for anything!! The highlight of my burns!

dang, missed LCN.......yeah, really LCN, you could fly out. at minimum you could stay here with me, so that'd be taken care of. and, there are times, where there are Burn parties on successive weekends, so almost of you could do 10 days, you could take in both!!
Dang Triken! you know you/you both can always stay here, if you choose to drive up......if you still have that table saw, ping me?
and AntiM: it sure would be fun, if a bunch more eplayans could make it. IIRC it's all of 12 hours to drive SLC to here.
I gotta start searching for a good deal, on a really good camera for my daughter, that she needs for college in the fall. Anyone know of good places to look?
and, just found out the "state" in their wisdom, changed some rule and now her school, and many other "private/trade " schools, are not eligible to get state grant money..........crap. Over what seems something out of the control of the school, anyway.
Foogin politicians,..........

Thanks LeChat! Great to see you hopping down from the rafters more often these days!
Yeah, it takes a bit of doin' to make the drive out from the East, though it is enriching to see the breadth and variety of the country. Good to see you Triken, yg and gyre! Hoping there might be a good home for that tablesaw, it sounded to me like a very fine one indeed.
Well, this dang smartphone has been acting flakey lately, not displaying all of the images in here and the like. (even my own images don't display) I've tried doing some upgrading, but I'm thinking it may be time for a new phone. This one has a hairline crack in it anyhow, from an encounter with a concrete floor a while back. (yeah, that's Concrete 2, Smartphones 0)
..anyhow, more B.E. stories please!..

That doesn't look like a pm.
Ygmir, if I can venture an opinion, if she isn't in graduate school, that is an utterly fucking ridiculous camera to have to have for class.
And that's based on advice I've been given by professionals.

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
The graduate program I want to take, no financial aid unless I enroll full time in other areas.
And they just cut all lottery aid to most people, which was justified on the grounds of full aid to most people.
Any class past mandatory now, no aid.
Impossible to graduate without taking other classes usually.
Glad they don't want me to buy the million dollar software I'll be learning.
18 hours now costs what four years used to cost.
I hope you can find a good deal.

Good luck with the college funding ((((Yggy))) and good luck to your daughter.
Not an expert on cameras, but, my son Arch got a real good lil camera for ~$600, a Nikon D3200, thats working really well for building his portfolio. Good camera reviews & advice at http://www.kenrockwell.com

Ugh, money. Wish I had useful, relevant advice for you Yggy.
SLC may be close, but Larry would actually need time off. I arrange our time off something like a year in advance. His schedule no longer allows for spontaneous weekends. When is BE in 2014?

yeah, the great camera debate. Her school, which works very closely with Hollywood film depts, (several directors and cameramen are alumni) and much of the staff are big dog photogs from Nat. Geo and such on sabbatical, ex students and such. They really emphasize this Canon, and even the new MK3 but say it's not necessary at all, but really say they'd like the MK2 for students. They are using it to film some of the current series on TV, it has full video capability, as well. As a visual journalism student, they say both are important.......and really, now the price of the camera and lenses (more than the camera in many cases), is pretty low compared to the funding they just took away. So, it may be moot anyway, unless we can do some big time juggling.
*sharpens pencil*
AntiM: I understand the planning thing.....well, I'd say it's very likely, next years BE14 would be around the same time, given which weekend worked out best.

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
I second Canon EOS-series cameras. 17 years with zero malfunctions in my part-time pro magazine work. A few years ago I switched to digital in the form of the entry level Rebel and find it more than adequate. But if the school has a recommendation... for Dawg's sake FOLLOW IT!
I bought mine at Action Camera in Roseville -- a real photography store with good service, and close to you.

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
thanks Elliot.
yeah, she has the Rebel, Xsi, and several lenses........turns out, both cameras can accept the same lens, but, some lenses are "full frame" (5dmk2) and some are "/s" which means for the not full frame cameras. dang, had I known that, I'd bought the full frame lenses for her in the first place.
dang lack of knowledge anyway!!!
But yeah, the school wants the 5dmkII as minimum, for a variety of reasons, and I guess is trying to keep as much uniformity as possible.
So, I'll be not only looking for the body, but several lenses. dang.

Everything takes learning, Ygmir.
And for education at this level, everybody should definitely be on the same page. If she shows up with a slide rule, she might very well not be taken seriously. Once she is well established in her profession, she can make Oscar-winning movies with a pin-hole shoe-box camera if she wants to.

Hi ASD. dang, I took no photos.......seems a weakness, (one of many), of mine, is forgetting to take photos.
ha, MEL!! for me, and maybe it's just me, but "quietly drunk" seems at odds with my perception of the wonderful person you are.
Hi AntiM!
looks like a nice winter storm coming in tonight.......we really need it, so yay!!
and, bought a sewing machine, so I can learn to sew and mend some of my pants. I've got more pants to mend, than the price of the machine, so, it seems to make sense.

Yggy , so sorry just gave away my sewing machine and want to suggest that you really check out the different
needle types and thread weights. used to sew leather, fur, silk with old machine by changing needles and thread
.and yes, cameras do distract me from my moment so I never take them when I am enjoying myself
and avoid people flashing in my face .so I do get it..but with all your camera discussion I thought maybe you would...

Mornin' campers!
It's a good day to be me. Or maybe even you, assuming you have a 401(k). The Dow Jones Industrial Average is at an all-time high at this very moment, sitting at 14261.22. That's about 90 points higher than it's previous high set back in 2007. God it's great being a capitalist in America! Next round's on me!
