street vs avenue - help!
i was filling out the placement questionnaire and it seems as though there's options for streets and avenues... but i can't find what the difference is anywhere on bm.com or on eplaya....
does anyone know? are "streets" the radials and "avenues" the spokes?

Re: street vs avenue - help!
Good Question! My guess..and it's JUST a guess...The hours would be the streets.ie.. 10:00, 3:30, etc.. And the Named ones..Avenues. My guess is they are smart enough to figure it out, if you're wrong. Don't know the street or avenue names for this year, but here's an example...10:30 and Mars
anything worth doing is worth overdoing..

Re: street vs avenue - help!
The link you provided appears to answer the question. The Esplanade is described as the "first street." So I think that means the radials are streets.freeeeeman wrote: does anyone know? are "streets" the radials and "avenues" the spokes?

3:00, 4:30, 7:30, and 9:00 are listed as "avenues." It likely means that the "spokes" are avenues.

the placement questionnaire reads
i just wish the map showed it definitively so i could be sure when i click "submit"...
the placement questionnaire reads
and... esplanade ... is the first street at the front
of course, they wrote "avenue" and described it as a "radial street"... lol....... avenues ... are high visibility & traffic locations on the radial streets

Well, shoot. I thought this explanation of the 2012 city layout might help, but clearly it references both numbered and lettered roads as Streets

The road circling Center Camp is named “Rod's Road” in honor of BRC designer Rod Garrett (1936-2011).
The light blue shaded area does not specify, but rather approximates where you will find reserved-placement, interactive theme camps (we're holding some prime space for the general public there too). Reserved theme camp space is marked on the playa with blue survey flags. Some of these plots are so large that they may appear unclaimed and available, when they actually are not. Be sure to camp outside the blue flagged zones to avoid encroaching on reserved zones, and then having to relocate your camp. Gates open at 6 pm Sunday 8/26. After 11:59 Sunday night, all truly unclaimed camping space everywhere is available to all.
The distance from the inner-most Esplanade street to the Man is 2400 feet. Esplanade to Alyssum Street, curb to curb, is 400 feet deep. Other mid-city double-deep blocks are 430 feet deep. The remaining blocks are 200 feet deep.
BOULEVARD G
A mid-city interactive boulevard, 40-foot wide Geranium street is adjacent to double-deep blocks and features art plazas at 4:30 and 7:30.
Public plazas are at Kingcup and 3:00, 6:00, and 9:00. We are holding most of the camping space around these plazas unreserved and available for the general public to occupy and maintain as an experiment in spontaneous urban planning and collaboration.

Re: street vs avenue - help!
In your camp description or notes (I haven't looked at the questionnaire for this year), describe where you want the frontage of your camp to be. Then on your camp layout, but it on there as well. We had a lot of luck with this approach for 2011 and 2012.freeeeeman wrote:yeah, that's what i'm thinking.

Yes.freeeeeman wrote: does anyone know? are "streets" the radials and "avenues" the spokes?
Avenues are much more heavily traveled. If placed on one you will actually have a corner (or two).
Camp frontage becomes a little less defined on the spokes and I'd think that stuff left out would be more likely to *walk* away due to heavy traffic.
I prefer streets...

Re: street vs avenue - help!
I don't know what the hell burning man means by avenue, but the purpose normally seems to be to delineate roads in one direction from roads going another direction in city planning.
Definitions say that an avenue is more heavily used, but I don't see that in practice in city use.
We have a church called the Widget Avenue Church on Widget Street.
This was a town before taken into the larger city.
The direction of avenues went from north-south to east-west.
In brc, heavy traffic can vary in direction, just like any city, so that's no help.
Ask the llc.

Re: street vs avenue - help!
All the roads are streets, with the following exceptions:
3:00, 4:30, 7:30, and 9:00 are Avenues. They're wider streets, and also have plazas on them.
The street whose name starts with G has evolved in the last couple years and is now thought of as a Boulevard. It's wider than the other 'lettered' streets to facilitate mutant vehicle traffic and connects with the 4:30 and 7:30 plazas.
When filling out the questionnaire (which I still have to get to), I believe you choose the general zone as outlined on the page the OP linked. From there, if you have a more specific placement request, make it (asking nicely, of course) in the comments/additional info field. Placement tries to accommodate peoples' requests, though the more specific or exacting you're looking for the less likely you are to get what you want. It's not because they're jerks and are trying to punish you for being demanding, it's that specific locations (ie such and such corner) limits the number of places they can put you. A more general request gives them dozens of opportunities to fit you into the neighborhood.
Good luck!

The picture is accurate to what I said, save for Boulevard G. However that's still a relatively newer thing, and still being developed by Placement. I'm sure they'll update it as they reach the point where it becomes an integral part of the placement process.
