Re: The Bar, Volume #4
HI MDF!
well, I build and plan to build all sorts of things. One thing I want to do, is cut my own interior paneling from a couple of super seasoned, standing dead old growth cedar logs I put up last year.
The snags had been "standing dead" for a long, long time. no rot. super hard (for cedar), and very, very aromatic.
and, well, it's another skill, I'll have no use for, make no money at, but have fun learning.
oh, I did buy a sewing machine. so, hope to get tips from all the sewers (why does that not sound right?)

It may sound right, but it doesn't look right. Seamstresses and seamsters might do.

Yeah, I'll go with tailor, gender neutral, implies skill.
we're getting a nice rain, which we sorely need, being only about 70% of normal for the year.
I'm feeling the urge for a "road trip".......just gotta decide if and where.

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
You could also use seamstress and seamster (rhymes with teamster) Yggy, hehehe… we got rain last night too, but not a whole lot. I think there was some kind of ball game event going on, I hope it didn't rain things out for 'em. Oooh, raw cut lumber. I just took a class on using the joynter/planer tools last month, for turning raw boards and unfinished lumber into stuff you can use to make finer pieces. If you're ever in need of getting a few boards done for a project let me know, I can get 'em sorted out for you. In the meantime, congrats and good luck on the sewing machine, think of it as a welder for fabric
We got an unusually bizarro biz offer this morning for our virtual world shoppe in SL. Usually it's fairly standard stuff, requests to open shops on somebody's sim or participate in some fashion show or something, but this one was someone making like they're some big established online store for virtual goods, and they were willing to consider letting us be one of the vendors they offer. Never heard of them, and their site looks like something somebody put together in a few hours. Seems like a scam of some sort. I replied to ask a bunch of biz-related questions, I'm curious as to whether it turns out to be a real thing or not. In the meantime, back to the virtual grindstone.

wow Trilo........when I get the courage again, I'd love to visit 2nd world, or where ever it is you do that stuff.
and thanks for the offer on wood finishing. As it happens, I have a 13" planer and two jointers. Though, if you wanna make some real custom wood stuff, we could work together I'm sure. I save a few huge black oak "joints", up to 36' dia and 8' long, where the wood should be very "burl like" as well and finger jointed and such patterns.

Love wood working! Before I committed to ceramics, I took woodworking classes at a local high school and spent some time using a planer and a joiner. Made a couple of salad bowls on the lathe. Two types of walnut and some ash for contrast. Couple of the prettiest things I have ever made. Also, years ago I made spice racks and some furniture cabinetry . Wood is a wonderful media. Thought about going back to it, but hardly have time for my pottery.

Re: The Bar, Volume #4

Good Spring time! I'm going out to a "fine" dinner with a local gal tonight -- seems like an appropriate activity for the First Day Of Spring. Strictly vegan food. I'm trying to recruit her as my fitness coach.
About fine wood working.... A fellow in this county is moving and must clear out the contents of an old barn, and he has a supply of wood for sale. He describes it as "walnut, oak, pine slabs & lumber", and told me it is suitable for cabinetry and such. He said something about thicknesses generous enough to machine down to desired finish. From a distance it looked like a pick-up-truck full. No, not free, so I am violating the Code, but... if it is truly "art grade" wood.... One never knows about such "barn finds" until after a thorough inspection. Once in a long while there is a pearl. PM me.
To compensate for my sudden outbreak of commercialism, I just gifted two bicycles (Playa donations from last year) to neighborhood street urchins. (I rebuilt the one they trashed. Mishaps occur.)
Yep, fair amount of rain overnight. Maybe enough to soften an inch of the dirt streets here, so I can repair some potholes and washboards.
Six hours to dinner date -- I better start combing the welding slag out of my beard.

Can't promise, in that I need some stars to align so I can even get away for a few days, but............
Hey 420!! are the kids still having fun?
Taking my truck in for some upgrades, that (if my research is correct) will pay for themselves easily, in longevity, durability, and economy, tomorrow.
same old "pay me now, or pay me later" thing, I guess.

Hi Yggy and good morning everyone,
Kids were both not feeling well yesterday (sore throats and feeling punky) so they spent 1/2 the day on my couch. Hopefully a day of rest was all that was needed...

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
Whew, yesterday ended up being long and agonizing. Worked on designs and modeling until sometime after 10, and still not finished. I made some great progress, though I ran into a snag that took a couple hours to get around last night only to smack my head right up against another snag. It was already late, so I decided to back away slowly and call it a night (I'll dive into that one in a little bit). I'm still a bit groggy, much caffeine will be needed today. And dammit Bill, I forgot to plug my phone in the other day and ran itself down to dead (which explains why I never heard back from a friend of mine haha). Grumble grumble grumble...

dang Trilo. you sure work at that stuff a lot. Gotta be fun, or profitable, to drive that much time. Good in ya though.
HI 420. dang sick stuff!! well young and energetic, I'm sure they'll bounce right back!
Hey FJ! yeah, I'm putting free flow air intake, 4" exhaust, free flow muffler, transmission cooler with external radiator and thermostatically controlled fan, new glow plugs, and a 4 positions "chip", which gives the choice of stock, towing, economy, and tons of h.p. (they claim 400 h.p. at the rear wheels.) I'm not so interested in the big h.p. gains, but supposedly it'll take me to about 275 h.p. and the chip also influences shifting patterns, to increase trans life and help economy.
My friend has been running this combo for a couple of years, same truck, and has gotten good results.
gotta go drop it, and a bucket of money, off now..............

Morning, kiddies. Good to see you ((((all)))). Beautiful sunny morning here and spring has indeed sprung. Love the warm weather. Going to see "Bouquets for Art" at the De Young Museum this afternoon with a tennis buddy. Playing hooky. Local florists install these remarkable flower arrangements at the museum for about a week or so as a museum fund raiser. Pretty spectacular. Sounds like a good fix for your truck, YG. I'm planning a road trip to Ashland, OR at the first of May for a Burner friend's 50th birthday. Love that country up there and Ashland is a great town. Gotta get going now

Re: The Bar, Volume #4
Hey Ygmir, that sounds like a good plan for the pick-um-up-truck. How about the transmission itself? A tranny expert can tell a lot about its condition by performing a full service. Automatic trannies are time bombs. They often fail all at once, and in the worst possible roadside location.
And there may be a "shift kit" available, which also reduces wear and tear in exchange for "less silky" shifts. (I doubt this has been completely replaced by electronics -- there must still be plungers and springs and orifices in there, no?) All this can be done by simply dropping the pan.
Wondermuss that some of you enjoyed the news.
This lady I sometimes go to dinners and other events with is a fairly fanatical vegan -- the kind who will send the tea back if it arrives with a drop of cow milk in it. Hard to argue with it though -- she is slim and fit and energetic like few people I know. And quite a vegan chef -- might have some recipes for you, Triken.
Gotta run.

You're making correct choices in whom you associate with if that's your idea of a fanatical vegan.
The kind with whom I've met, arson would be a reasonable response to a drop of cow milk.
