Playa and Gerlach visit...
Heading to the playa next weekend....I've never experienced it empty and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm planning on doing some hiking and hot spring soaking. I thought about spending the night at Bruno's. I figured it might be kind of fun to have some cocktails with the Gerlach folks. If I'm likely to be the only soul there I probably would just have a bite to eat and then head back to hang with friends in Reno. Can anyone shed some light on Gerlach sans Burning Man?

two things: at the restaurant counter don't sit on the two seats to the left of the central walk-thru. those are reserved for Bruno.
do not drive on dark playa. you will get stuck

Definately do not drive on dark colored (wet) Playa. You WILL sink to your axles. That stuff almost swallowed me and my motorcycle once.
Life's a bitch, then you go to Burning Man - Unjonharley

You can take CR 34 past the BM 8 mile entrance & 12 mile entrance, a short ways to Soldier Meadows Rd turnoff. It is a gravel road, OK if you have decent ground clearance. Great views of BRD.
Further down 34 is Fly Geyser Ranch and the road turns to gravel. Fly Geyser is private access, but you can see it from the road.
There is a new BLM office @ the Transfer Rd just past Gerlach 447/34 junction. Don't know if it is open this time of year, but there are kiosks outside that describe the history of the area.
I have found the hot springs (Black Rock and Double Hot) too hot for soaking, at least in summer, but have never been to Trego (east side off Jungo Rd). Don't know if you can access Frog Pond this time of year. You should be able to see the steam rising from numerous small hot springs along the way. Fun to stop & check those out too.
Bruno's motel rooms are decent. You can book them at the Casino bar.
It is gorgeous out there and really great to experience BRD outside of BM.

Did you go? How was it?
