Hair stuff

This year I took leave in conditioner! It doesn't make your hair clean, but it can feel that way for a while. I recommend it.

Conditioner

Post by robbidobbs » Sat Sep 06, 2003 9:30 am

I washed my hair in a storage tub of water, let the conditioner soak in while I combed my hair (it's to my butt BTW), washed the rest of my body and then rinsed my hair. I kept it in a tight braid, and was able to go for days w/o thinking about it. 5 gallons is good for 2 washings, which gets you through the week.

This year I had my conditioner sitting in my bag the whole time. I completely forgot to use it! And each time I washed my hair, I was wondering, "Why in the hell is my hair so dry?!" haha. I couldn't figure it out. It wasn't until I got home that I nearly slapped myself over my head and thought...wow, the playa can do strange things to you sometimes, like forget your head.

The leave-in sounds like a great idea though. I'll try it for next year!

I slathered about a palmful of Sauve Naturals Aloe conditioner in my hair about every other day. Hair came out fine, nice and soft. Wore a sarong tied mamushka-style around my head.

If you want instant gratification, once you get off-Playa hit it with VO5 Intensive Treatment and it will totally reset your hair in one go. Well worth it. I'm thinking of packing it next year and trying it on-Playa to see if it works as well out there.

I only washed/conditioned my hair about 3 times in the 12 days I was out there.

I mostly kept my hair in braids or buns. Each time I re-did them, I used a spray-on leave-in conditioner. It helped keep my hair from becoming too dry, and it made it easier to comb through.

(my hair was a bit below shoulder-length this year)

Next year, I think I'm going to have it done in braids before I leave for the playa. Several people had GORGEOUS braids that I coveted this year. (Azul, from Greeters, I really loved your braids this year!!)

I kept my hair mostly in braids or buns, too. Mine's mid-back, curly and dry as hell. I deep conditioned once out on the playa, and used white vinegar to rinse a few times while washing.

Vinegar = nature's miracle.

Kiehl's Silk Groom is an excellent conditioning/styling aid. It does attract dust, but then you get that great Silly Putty playa hair faster, without it going all rough.

I had my hair cut about 3 weeks before BM - I had been trying to get an appointment with a friend's hairdresser for months (she's got a full client list already), and I finally cornered her and told her I *had* to get an appointment before August 24th because I was going to BM, she was like "You're...going...to...Burning Man???" She's a rocker/punk/hippie, and apparently I said the magic words. Got in 3 weeks later! I had her cut my hair in an A-line bob tapering sharply forward to just below my chin so I could still pull it back.

Since I knew water was going to be scarce, I took Johnson's Baby Shampoo so that at least I wouldn't have a dandruff reaction to not getting all the shampoo out. I also used Johnson's Tangles No More as a leave-in conditioner (I couldn't seem to find anything else), but it wasn't as effective as I thought it would be. The day after I used it, my hair developed a raging case of static wispies; I had it pulled back and under a hair scarf all the time anyways, but when I took it down to brush and re-tie my hair I ended up looking like I had just scrubbed a pillow case on my head. The second (and last) time I washed my hair, I begged our neighbors for some regular conditioner - my hair sucked it all up and I was good to go until I got home. I think next year I'll invest in a couple gallons of white vinegar for both my hair and my feet...

Mane'n'Tail is the one for me.

This year I was a dummy and used castile soap on my hair, both for ecological reasons and ease in rinsing. But damn, it sure dries out your hair.

Next year - Mane'n'Tail shampoo and conditioner, for sure.

braids!!!

Post by fraggle78 » Tue Sep 16, 2003 10:38 am

I totally must reccomend the braids thing. I've gone out 2 years and had it in braids both times and I loved it. Some of the girls I camped with tried the conditioner/rinsing thing and they were "hair miserable" all week. I don't have ethnic hair(and its fine textured and only to my shoulders) so I have some breakage but I just cut bangs and deep condition for a year to get myself ready again!! My hairdresser hates it but the joy of being able to pull it up when its hot and not having to wash it ROCKS!! If anyone is in the San diego area I have a braider who does it out of her house for FAR less than the Braid shops do. I priced it out and it would have been over 250$ to get it done. My girl did it for around 100$ :P

fraggle (so named for the braids) :!:

braids

Post by Alexiis » Sun Sep 21, 2003 9:39 am

I have been wearing braids as a regular hairstyle on and off playa for over 2 years. For the record, I am a very pale woman with very straight, long hair. I have always wanted dreads, but my hair can't even tangle on a bad day so braids are my alternative.....The secret for me to keeping them nice and my scalp confortable without washing too often is "Grandmas Secret" braid and twist conditioner. This is a spray in/ leave in product that relives the "itchys" after the initial braiding process, as there is a slight menthol and other medicating herbal concoction in the formulae. I went 12 days and washed twice. No issues. The spray also helps keep your scalp moist. Also, I know some people don't like using it, but if you experience excessive itching and some red bumps from the pulling/weight of the new braids, Cortaid or a similar product should help. There are alot of products out there and if you are shy, go to Target, they generally have a good "ethnic" hair section. Also, ask your braider; s/he will have loads of advice for you. Heck you're stuck being yanked on for hours, you might as well tap into that captive resource. I love wearing braids and they are very easy to care for. As for price, being charged more than $125-$175 for simple braided styles seems outlandish to me. I rarely pay more than $75-100.
Please ask if you need more info.

This was my first burn and one of my village mates suggested braids and I was SO GLAD I did it!

I had super long braids almost to my waist with blue & purple highlights and they were fun and hella functional and easy to deal with on the playa....

the hellish part was taking them out (note to self: next year LESS BRAIDS n SHORTER!!)

I just read in Woman's World that coconut milk is a good conditioner. Probably smells better than everything else, too. Add a drib of rosewater in it and you'll probably have a steady stream of "Wow, you smell <b>WONDERFUL!</b>"s as your Playa soundtrack :)

So hold back a few ounces from the piña colada mixers...

We also had a campmate that went around with a bottle of coconut oil around her neck, gifting lip-dabs of it to people she thought needed it, which was pretty much everyone. I'm definitely tracking some of that down for this year, kicked ass on every lip balm I ever tried and tasted great :9

I had braided extensions last year. I found a girl form the local cosmetology school willing to do it at my house for cheap. Allot of cosmetology students have been braiding for years so, their very good and need the money
