How much ice can you get at one time?

We are planning right now, and trying to figure out how much ice we can purchase at one time, and how long the lines are? When is the best time to go?

Depends a bunch on how much ice is there, and how many people are there.

I've had no waits, I've had hour long waits... Never Tom Waits.

How about a non-snark answer? As much as you can carry (I usually grab 6 bags because you buy 5 and the sixth is free) for $15. If you go to the stations at 3:00 or 9:00 the lines are shorter than at 6:00 because they have fewer people in their general vacinity and and the 6:00 station pulls people from about 4:30 to 7:30 whereas the (for example) 3:00 station pulls from 2:00 to 4:30, or about 17% fewer people. Also hitting it as it opens at 9 a.m. (start queueing up around 8:50 or so) should get you in and out in no time.

Yeah, a little wagon is very helpful, & Doc's advice is also spot on. Go early while people are still waking up. Wear sunscreen, there might be a wait. I always take my parasol.

If you ask a few folks in your camp (or your next door neighbor) if they would like to buy some too, they might be happy to go get some the next time. Make sure everybody knows where each other's coolers are before you take off, though. Sometimes the wait is long and a person might be at the bathroom when you return (or have had some sort of crazy once-in-a-lifetime offer to go do something).

I think the crushed ice is less than that. (I really should know the answer to this )
If memory serves, the typical bag of ice a liquor store is like 6 or 7 pounds. And the bags of ice sold at 3, 6, and 9 are smaller than the average bag of ice at a store. I believe most big stores carry 10lb as the larger size, right?
And I would guess that the larger block ice is 8 lbs. Only because making 1 block ice = 1 gallon seems pretty logical.

Take your icemelt and put it in your Bucket Cooler thing...or into your garden sprayer that you add a small amount of vinegar to and then spray on yourself.

And Tuesday is the busiest day for ice sales, because everybody is still organizing camp and the ice they brought just ran out.

*ahem* Illy you should know this: the bags really are 7 pounds each, crushed or block; the blocks are smaller but weight the same. You can buy as much as you can carry out. All sales are cash only.

Sometime they do run out, if one truck empties before the next truck shows up; at that point the crews drink beer and dance around to loud music while everyone waits.

Which brings up the best way to buy as much ice as you want and never wait in line: join the crew. Volunteer for a 3 hour shift. Take one bag home for free at the end of your shift, come around the back to buy more whenever you like. No more waiting.
