Does anyone know of a feather substitute?
I'm a big time costume person and would like to make some new cool stuff for the Playa this year. Last year my boyfriend brought along his dragon costume and we had to tear all the feathers out of it just so he could wear it. I am just wondering, is there some sort of feather substitute that anyone knows about? Possibly something that wouldn't fall apart that acts the same and is long like feathers are? I have seen some fur that resembles feathers, but we need them for accents on headdresses and what not (they need to be longer than fur). Any ideas or suggestions would be super helpful, who knows, maybe someone knows of something that is new that I have never heard of before that is playa safe.
Please and thank you! <3
PS: I have searched the boards and couldn't come up with anything.

Silk pheasant feathers. Found them at Michaels, but they're available online as well.

Also leather feathers. Someone on here just posted their awesome native american style headdress done with leather feathers. And some of the carved ones I've seen are spectacular.

I saw that leather headdress, that was freaking amazing! I was more or less looking for artificial feathers, are these playa safe? I know artificial flowers make a ton of moop.

The ones I picked up seem as steady as anything. The stems are wire and should be easy enough to fasten in a secure manner. They were like $5 a bunch a Michael's, so you could beat them up a bit to see how they hold up.

you can also use that flat crafting sheet foam. Took a mask making class with Kilbuck as the instructor. He demonstrated the foam feathers, pretty cool.
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

I wouldn't call artificial feathers playa-safe (it's just synthetic material designed to be as light, and subsequently as moopy) as a feather. The leather or silk substitutes I've seen are awesome, though I haven't yet gotten the chance to make either so couldn't tell you how easy it is to get the desired effect.

Finally found my post about leather feathers. With a minimal amount of work you can make them as realistic as desired.

Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

If you want the effect of feathers and not so much the shape, try recycled sari silk ribbon. I am in no way affiliated with the website I am posting and do not make any money from there, but I do buy alot of yarn lol http://www.darngoodyarn.com
It's sewn well and you can cut to whatever length you want. I've done a boa out of it and beat it against the wall and no moop.

That looks great. I may have to get some and experiment with a slightly more fashionable hair covering system this year.tamarakay wrote:If you want the effect of feathers and not so much the shape, try recycled sari silk ribbon.
