please settle a pub argument - how dusty??

I'm told by my gf and those who've been going to the event longer than I have (2004) that we haven't seen real rain on the playa yet. In 98 a storm came in that got so bad people were stranded for days. Axle deep mud. My gf still packs several extra days' worth of food, just in case.

Take extra food and water on any outing. On the way back one year.. The van went tits up at night.. Just threw a bed roll on the ground and went to sleep.. Next morning it was 24 degrees.. my bed rolls are put up layers to take any weather.. topped off with a plastic under and over when sleeping on the open ground will do thr dew.. if it's a three dog night and you don't have a dog.. A king size pillow will fill in you neck space..

2012 there was a Friday night whiteout from Center Camp to 2 from at least 10:30 until sometime well after midnight - dust was so thick we couldn't see the kleig-lights around the Man until almost halfway there. Had to walk our bikes back because the wind was pushing so hard against us. We were coated, but then it cleared up as the night went on. We were at Center Camp & Esplanade (at 6:30) and there was a lot of dust early in the week - enough we couldn't see across the street, then just intermittent until Friday. Location really matters.

Yeah, I was located between 8:00 and 10:00 all that night and while there was dust in the air, I wouldn't have called it a whiteout. I wanted to stay out but everyone was still running home. It didn't seem like a big deal to a well-muffled and goggled noob. Guess I should have headed over to 3:00 for the experience. We took our mini-MV out around 2am and it was still pretty dusty over on that half, but mostly cold/windy. Some poor thing from Orgy Dome was shivering out in the middle of inner playa and we gave her a ride back.

Yeah 2012 at 4 it sucked. I fell in a pot hole and screwed up my ankle nicely. I wanted to go to root, but by the time I got back to,camp, taped it up and got ready it was dusty as fuck so Tom and I stayed in that night, it wasn't worth going out, now if bassnectar was there... I most likely would have lol.

That is, with some concession that there were some pretty dusty areas and times during 2012.

However, I want to thank you all for posting & in the words of Tootled "in your face Turtlebum" for I have successfully started a good discussion on here that is fairly, if not all, snark free (so far)
Although, we are on page 2 - so for those holding off....

You run back to camp when a wind starts to make sure everything is tied down, and then make sure it's all well stowed before you head out. You hear the sound of flapping fabric, and think it surely will rip soon. The last two years haven't been like that.

People in their camps, hanging onto their shade structures so they won't blow away. I once saw an uncovered dome lift off during set up. The guy clinging to it was a good six feet in the air before he let go and dropped.

Or the elusive tent in the air sighting ... clear skies over the open playa, dust blowing through the city, and a tent sailing high overhead sailing toward the east.

Arugment is a strong description - the dust debate would probably count as only background bickering for us.

I wonder if the volume inside a dome tent would be enough, if filled with helium, to get it airborne without the wind. Literally a dome tent balloon. Obviously you'd have to have a Mylar or latex lining. That would be a fun installation.
